The Mexican National Tag Team Championship is a professional wrestling championship endorsed by Distrito Federal Box Y Lucha Commission. As of 2020, the titles are promoted by CMLL.
Current Champions
Fugaz & Esfinge are the current champions, they defeated Pólvora & Felino Jr. for the titles on March 20, 2022 at Arena Mexico.
History of Championship
Mentions of this championship before 1982 are erroneous; no national tag team championship is believed existed prior to the Mendoza brothers becoming the first champion. There were no national team champions of any kind prior to 1982. There were an Arena Mexico Tag Team Championship, pairs titles which were only (and very rarely) defended in Arena Mexico primarily in the 60s and 70s. Those champions have since often been called the Mexico tag team championships, were held by the best wrestlers in Mexico at the and can be seen as the predecessor to these championships, but they weren't an officially sanctioned championship by the Mexico City commission. There are also existed Tuesday and Friday Arena Coliseo Tag Team Championship as well as Mexico State Tag Team Championship that have and are confused with early Mexican National Championships. Those who held those titles had real meaningful reigns, just not in this lineage. Mentions of the 1982 tournament are clear on the champions becoming the first to hold these belts.
There doesn't seem to be any special reason the Mexico City commission waited so long to create tag team championships. It does appear Promociones Mora creating world tag team championships spurred the creation of these titles so EMLL could have their own equal set of belts, but there are currently few available magazine sources from that time to find the exact reasoning.
From December 1995 until August of 1997, this championship was a source of confusion. Father/son champions Juventud Guerrera and Fuerza Guerrera held the titles in 1995, but the titles were declared vacant when Fuerza left AAA. AAA held a decision match for the vacant title on 1996.01.12 in Neza, where Juventud Guerrera and new partner Psicosis defeated Volador and El Mexicano for the vacant belts. Later that year, after Juventud also left AAA, the commission invalidated that championship match, deciding that the Guerreras were still champions because they never actually lost the titles in a match. In August of that same year, the commission re-vacated the championship for the same reason it originally did - Juvi and Fuerza still did not wrestle in the same promotion and could not team-up. Both the Fuerza/Psicosis and the second Psicosis/Juvi reigns are not listed in the lineage due to the commission's decisions.
AAA did not fill the championship again until 1997. The promotion announced on December 8, 2008 that would stop to using the national titles in order to focus on their own titles. Champions La Parka and Octagón continued to defend the titles on not-televised shows at least twice. Octagon quitting AAA in 2014 put the belts on the shelf.
Soon after La Parka passed away, CMLL announced they took over control of the titles on February 12, 2020, and announced the start of a tournament in order to crown new champions. Atlantis Jr. and Flyer defeated Hijo del Villano III and Templario on March 13, 2020 in Arena México to win the vacant titles in one of the promotion's last shows before the COVID-19 pandemic.
