Diana is a CMLL tecnica, although she spends more of her time in Monterrey. She's a beautiful woman and popular, but hasn't yet matured as a luchadora.
Diana spent the end of 2005 and early 2006 out of the ring, due to a broken leg. Diana's a motorcycle based traffic reporter in Monterrey in her other job, and she was hit while covering another accident.
Monterrey luchadora Diana La Cazadora (Alma Corina Gutierrez, 48) passed away on Saturday. She had a lung infection that had taken a turn for the worse in recent days and ultimately took her life. Her death was one of those that got picked up as a story in all the Mexican news sites.
Diana was a popular and attractive wrestler in Monterrey, from the same class of luchadoras as Princesa Sugehit and Dark Angel. She was central to Monterrey’s Lucha Libre Femenil promotion in the early 00s, with that group running in a tiny building that was bringing in women’s wrestlers from around the year. She also worked as an on-air traffic reporter on Monterrey’s Multimedios. If you’ve watched enough Mexican news TV, you’ll notice they tend to load the less serious shows with attractive women, and Diana fit the mold.
CMLL brought back their women’s division in 2005, and Diana was one of many from Monterrey to get a shot. She stuck around longer than most. She also actually worked an AAA TV match prior, back in 2003, but it didn’t go anywhere. What I didn’t recall, but SuperLuchas fills in the gap in their obit, is that Diana got a similar TV traffic reporter gig with Televisa in Mexico City. My recollection was that Diana was alright as a wrestler and tried harder than she probably had to try. The two memorable moments from her three-year CMLL run were Diana breaking her leg in a match near the end of 2006 and her hair match with Amapola in 2007. To put it in context: Diana la Cazadora was an attractive woman with star qualities; Amapola was a great worker whose role was to give the attractive stars good matches. Everyone thought Diana was a shoe-in to win, to the point I half-joked it must have been a prank when CMLL announced Amapola won the match. That win made Amapola’s career. She won the CMLL women’s title a few months later, and the CMLL women’s division became the Amapola and Marcela show as a result. I don’t know the reasons why Diana la Cazadora agreed to that hair loss; there was no reason she had to do it, but it meant a great deal.
SuperLuchas says Televisa cut Diana’s on-air role. The CMLL bookings weren’t enough to keep Diana in Mexico City, so she left in August of 2008. Diana would remain a name wrestler in Monterrey, but seemed to move on to other things in life; she wrestled every year but never that many matches. She seemed to be well regarded and remembered by her peers; they hurried to do a fundraising show before she passed away.
