Liga Elite

The 2016 Liga Elite was an professional wrestling round-robin tournament held by Lucha Libre Elite. It began on March 30, 2016. It was expected that the loser of the tournament must be shaved off or unmasked, which did not come to fruition due to multiple competitors leaving. During the matches, a win was worth three points, a draw was worth one, and a loss was worth zero. Matches aired on Lucha Azteca on Saturday nights and were repeated on Sunday mornings.

Drawbacks

As well as All Elite League, this edition had a lot of drawbacks in its development. The first couple of dates were ran as normal, but with the passage of time some wrestlers were removed and other wrestlers were added to the tournament. Negro Casas was the first wrestler who presented troubles, as he was injured some weeks in and missed some matches in the tournament. He was replaced by Rey Escorpión on July 7. Bobby Lashley was unable to return to Mexico and ended up being replaced by Teddy Hart. Diamante Azul replaced Cibernético later in the tournament, only for Cibernetico to come back regardless (possibly as a replacement for someone else entirely). Blue Demon Jr. seemingly replaced either La Mascara or Volador Jr. on September 30, considering who he wrestled.

Notes

On June 28, Teddy Hart (who came on as replacement for Bobby Lashley) defeated Extreme Tiger in a match announced as part of Liga Elite. Lashley previously had defeated Tiger on June 2 before leaving the tournament.

A match between Diamante Azul and Teddy Hart held on July 14 didn't count as a Liga Elite match according to Official Standings shown on Lucha Azteca. Likewise, Blue Demon Jr. had three singles matches on November 10 against fellow Liga Elite competitors Caristico, Extreme Tiger & Cibernetico, that were seemingly not treated as Liga Elite league matches.

Also on July 14, Rush defeated LA Park in a Liga Elite Super Libre by disqualification. This match was excised from the standings the following week, and no longer counted towards the league.

On September 23, Cibernetico - having left after July 7 and relinquished his spot to Diamante Azul - re-entered the tournament in a loss to Rey Escorpion. Escorpion was himself a replacement for Negro Casas, whom Cibernetico had already beaten as part of the league on June 9, a result presumably overturned by this quasi-rematch. Likewise, Azul's one tournament match against Extreme Tiger in the interim was re-matched a week later by Cibernetico, thereby erasing his contribution to the standings. Presuming, at least, that Cibernetico was reclaiming his original slot in the brackets.

Blue Demon Jr. joined the tournament on September 30. By which point, the league had largely fallen apart & stopped emphasizing of the standings, making it difficult to determine whether he was replacing a participant or simply entering as a 13th competitor on the bracket. He was most likely a fill-in for an MIA Volador Jr., given Volador Jr.'s high placement on the leaderboard.

On November 18, Caristico and Rey Escorpion - the top 2 points finishers on the leaderboard at the time - wrestled a match that was presented as the Liga Elite 2016 Final. Caristico submitted Escorpion with La Mistica (following a distraction from Cibernetico) to be crowned the overall winner and finally, mercifully, end the entire sordid ordeal.
