I don’t want to tell people how to mourn, but I feel like you’ll get more out of pointing attention to a useful remembrance of someone than you will out of complaining about the lack of something typically not done just to be done.

LuchaBlog Obituary:

Legendary referee Rafa el Maya (Rafael González Lopez, 72) passed away on Sunday. Maya was a referee in CMLL for decades, and then briefly in AAA after parting ways with CMLL. (“30 years in CMLL, 1 in AAA.“) Most of EMLL/CMLL’s referees for that period were former wrestlers considered too small to ever to make it to Arena Mexico as a luchador, but could perhaps get one of the few spots to referee. Maya seems to have wrestled on small shows in the 70s and joined EMLL sometime in the 80s. (One of the names he used as El Guarura – Bodyguard – and that was his non-wrestling job for a time. Another was Maya Azteca, which led to his ref name.) He was the referee in the Atlantis/Villano III mask match, one of the most significant matches in the history of Mexico. He was also a referee in the movie Nacho Libre. Maya played a slightly tecnico referee in CMLL, which got played up more after he left. He was a guy who took the job seriously, ran training seminars after he left CMLL, and though many modern referees were not doing the job with the respect it deserved. Maya had turned into a YouTube video guy in recent years.

CMLL hasn’t put a graphic out for Rafa el Maya. They didn’t acknowledge Nosferatu either. Maya’s passing is getting attention, as is anger about CMLL not acknowledging it, and that might pressure them into doing something. CMLL keeps the bar pretty high for acknowledging deaths; it’s either people currently employed with CMLL or giant stars. I’ve said before that CMLL (and all wrestling promotions) should acknowledge more people in this way. I also don’t feel like it’s a great use of fan energy to get upset about who and who doesn’t get graphics; it’s simply a reminder to keep promotions at an arm’s distance. When you’re out, you stop existing. There are many remembrances out there that have more to say than a template of a graphic that just has a name, year, and photo dropped in. I don’t want to tell people how to mourn, but I feel like you’ll get more out of pointing attention to a useful remembrance of someone than you will out of complaining about the lack of something typically not done just to be done.
