Long time CMLL referee, following a career as a lightweight. Acknowledged father of Averno and is allowed to referee his son's matches (which sometimes plays into screwy finishes.) Seemed to disappear as referee in 2011 (with maybe Edgar el Güero taking his spot?)

Rodolfo Ruiz (86) passed away on Sunday. Ruiz was active from the early 60s to the early 90s, and did some occasional work after that. Ruiz was trained by original (and legendary) EMLL trainer Gonzalo Avendano. Ruiz was a rudo and, by the accounts of the magazines of the day, a pretty good macho character. He was also a lightweight, which led him to championships – two-time national champion, one-time UWA featherweight champion – but also meant he wasn’t pushed outside of EMLL’s B-shows. (Ruiz got the same Pequeno Maestro nickname that Virus uses now.) On the rare occasions got to work the Friday night shows, he worked the prelim singles matches. EMLL didn’t have much use for lightweights in the big Mexico City shows, which meant most of his big work was done elsewhere. He had a multi-year rivalry with local lightweight star Chanoc in Acapulco and hair matches in the smaller Mexico City buildings. He stayed loyal to CMLL until they had no more use for him the 80s, then did stints in the UWA and in the indies. Ruiz returned to EMLL as a referee for many years, and that’s how most fans today might remember him. CMLL seemingly replaced him with Edgar Noriega in 2011; Noriega comes across as a big personality, while Ruiz seemed much more toned down. Ruiz is the father of the current CMLL luchador Averno. Ruiz also wrestled for a time as Recnor Latino, eventually losing his mask to Black Shadow Jr.. Ruiz thought few remembered him in the gimmick, so he urged his son to take on that name when he was starting his career. Ruiz was concerned that if Averno wrestled as “Rodolfo Ruiz Jr.” or anything else connected to his father, he’d be typecast in a similar prelim role. That was a valid concern, and maybe a strong indication of how Ruiz saw his own concern.

(Nerd stuff: The luchawiki lists Rodolfo Ruiz as starting in December 1962 because that’s how it’s always been listed, but I’ve got lineups with his name on it in August 1962 and February 1961.)
