Miss Janeth (Janeth Fragoso Alonso, 52) passed away on Wednesday. Janeth worked both as a wrestler and a rare female valet/manager for Mexico; she replaced Andy Barrow as the second to The Killer in that spot. Janeth was married to fellow luchador Punker, and was the daughter-in-law of Mohawk (who was the Bandido in early AAA.) Janeth started in the late 80s in the UWA and CMLL, took about two years off, and then resurfaced in AAA for the rest of her mainstream career. She managed Killer there, she won Migala’s hair early on, and then settled into the same “here’s a random trios match” pattern that most AAA women were in during the late 90s and early 2000s. She also led a double life as the masked Sexy Boom in 1997 and 1998, though it’s hard to figure how they expected that to stay a mystery with her distinctive long red hair still showing. Janeth always had that early 90s look, especially with the big hair.
Janeth’s last AAA match was in 2007. My recollection is that it seemed like she might have been on the way out even if Pena had not died, but she ended up being one of those names that went elsewhere during that transition. Janeth wrestled on the indies infrequently for years and years. She had a TV title/hair match feud with Yuca la Potranquita in the long-forgotten (and often quite bad) Leyenda de la Lucha Libre promotion. Janeth was still wrestling from time to time; she was listed on a card last Saturday.
While the most famous title win of her career was winning the UWA Women’s championship, she didn’t win it while wrestling in UWA. Her sister, Zuleyma, had won it in the early 90s and stopped defending it for a decade. The UWA was long dead by the time they brought back it. Janeth and Zuleyma switched titles; Janeth and Ayako Hamada switched back and forth; and then Janeth held the title for the rest of her career. The real big win is the 2006 Reina de Reinas tournament, when AAA treated it as the most important objective for a woman in the promotion to achieve.

AAA didn’t acknowledge Miss Janeth’s passing, no different than CMLL not acknowledging Solomon Grundy. Neither seemed to have left on bad terms, nor did they do anything to complicate a promotion’s decision to issue a graphic with their name on it.  They appeared to be good employees (or independent contractors) from an era or three before current management. Grundy has remained in contact with some CMLL personnel in recent years. Janeth was still wrestling and doing some promoting. Neither was recently relevant, but they also weren’t long forgotten.
Both promotions speak about how much their history and traditions mean to them. In reality, only the most prominent stars remain relevant to those groups after a few years. There’s no significant turnover in these offices. There are definitely people in CMLL who worked with Solomon Grundy, and there are likely people in AAA who remember Janeth. The time and cost of posting a memorial graphic on social media are minimal. Every Mexican wrestling media site I saw put one out for both, so it can’t be hard. The reputational cost of ignoring the people who’ve worked for you so simply is higher. It’s a good reminder to talent how little you mean once you stop generating money for them.

Biography

Miss Janeth was a long time middle level ruda for AAA. Her career with the promotion stretches back at least as far as the 1996 hair match against Migala. She never seems to have been the focus of the division, and finally got her moment in the spotlight by winning Reina de Reinas in 2006. That win wasn't followed up on much, as Janeth and other women appeared phased out with AAA's emphasis on the Apache family storyline. In early 2007, Janeth teamed with Tiffany and Rossy Moreno as Las Brujas, but the group was only featured for a few episodes before fading away.

Janeth is last known to have appeared in an AAA ring in 2007, and it's unclear if she's left the company or is just on hiatus for personal reasons.

Janeth’s last AAA match was in 2007. My recollection is that it seemed like she might have been on the way out even if Pena had not died, but she ended up being one of those names that went elsewhere during that transition. Janeth wrestled on the indies infrequently for years and years. The real big win is the 2006 Reina de Reinas tournament, when AAA treated it as the most important objective for a woman in the promotion to achieve.

SuperLuchas has a deeper Miss Janeth obit.
