A dancing, stripping tecnico who's oddly in CMLL.
Fabian was trained primarily by Solar, and honors him in his mask design, but does not resemble his style in his ring. Fabian is in the mold of the dozens of pretty boy dancer tecnicos AAA's created over the years, despite never wrestling in the promotion. Fabian instead first was noticed as a wrestler in IWRG, as part of the Los Strippers group with Star Boy and Marco Rivera.
Fabian was introduced to CMLL through the second Guapos U group, though he still was mostly wrestling for IWRG. Fabian's membership with the group was mostly unnotable, except for the rudos in the group turning on him when he was showing everyone else his stripping moves, and those rudos then being kicked out of the group.
Fabian's first long run in CMLL was in 2005 under the Metro name, a gimmick sponsored by the newspaper of the same name. Fabian was the winner of a set of tryouts for the new gimmick, but didn't reach any notable successes under that name. He did get to be in middle of the card matches regularly, which was a bonus for someone of his experience and ability at the time.
The Metro gimmick didn't get over, so it was handed to Neutron to try in 2006, and Fabian resumed wrestling in CMLL under that name. Fabian's continued as a second/third match tecnico since then, with little notable matches.
Fabian seems to be a lesser in-ring wrestler, who makes up for it with his physique and stripping persona. Fabian doesn't seem to lack for effort, but his ability is somewhat questionable. For a long time, he tried a Asai Moonsault as his signature dive, but showed bad form with hit and narrowly avoided accident many times. On one try gone especially wrong, Fabian managed to injure Okumura, putting him out for several weeks due to shoulder issues. Okumura and Fabian have talked about having a match to settle the issue now between them, but CMLL hasn't given them more than occasional random trios. Okumura does not seem to hold a grudge as much as look at it as opportunity to get an important match out of it.
Fabian's work outside of the ring include running his own gym, and still working in stripping. Early in his CMLL career, pictures surfaced of Fabian unmasked and stripping, and it's not clear if he stopped stripping at that point. Fabian's recently worked with Rey Bucanero to promote CMLL shows at night clubs with stripping in between the matches.
Fabian el Gitano, a CMLL tecnico for the last seven years, passed away earlier today. Fabian, who gave his name as “Emilio Fabian Fernandez de Leon” when he lost his mask last year, died from a gunshot wound in his apartment. At this point, there are conflicting stories on the cause of his death, either suicide or murder. I’ve seen ages of 39, 40, and 41 listed for him tonight. (Edit: Notimex says it looks to be the result of a drunken dispute.)
Fabian, trained by Solar, first came to national prominence in IWRG as Los Strippers, and that’s the character he’s used during most of his career. Fabian was brought in to CMLL as part of the second Guapos U storyline. Fabian was written out of that group to instead become the first Mexico City version of Metro. That lasted only a year, and he returned to his Fabian stripper gimmick. Fabian never could get past the second/third level, but was a regular presence in both the normal CMLL cards and smaller arenas; he seemed to work Coliseo Coalaco more than any other CMLL guy when they were associated with the building. Fabian was also involved in conduction the CMLL Fashion Show at the last two Lucha Libre Expos.
Fabian’s biggest moment was this past July, when he lost his mask to Angel de Oro in July’s cage match. Fabian losing his mask was a bit of a surprise. It was also probably his best match in the promotion. Fabian had continued on unmasked, though he cut off much of his trademark long hair during the winter. Fabian’s last match was last Friday, losing in the segunda.

Not a lot new this morning. The latest reports seem pretty sure it was a murder that followed a fight, though less sure of the reason. Shocker was seen visiting Fabian’s family. IWRG, where Fabian started, held a moment of applause for him during their show; that would’ve been the first most people there would’ve heard about it. CMLL hasn’t said anything yet. I wonder if someone’s on vacation this week, and if only takes one person on vacation for the site to not get updated for the week. Maybe Lluvia can recruit people at her cyber cafe to help?
Record has photos from Fabian el Gitano’s wake, including his casket. Rey Bucanero, Brazo de Oro, Solar, Brazo de Platino, Amapola, Robin, Shocker, Tony Rivera, Rafa El Maya, Franco Colombo, Leono, Sangre Azteca, José Luis Feliciano, Súper Brazo, Disturbio are those listed as being there, though that’s probably only a small portion. Many on last night’s show sounded affected by his passing. Hoy Veracruz, reprinting a Universal story, has quotes from Bucanero (he and Fabian were very close), Camorra and Rafael Maya.
That article claims Fabian died of “haemorrhagic pancreatitis”, not of murder or suicide. I don’t understand how we can get so many very different causes of death. It really doesn’t matter and it’s not hard to figure why a tamer story is being told here, but it’s doesn’t really help. Leading causes of that kind of death are over-drinking and steroid use; it probably wasn’t a scorpion bite.
