Ciclon Ramirez (Celso Reyes Daza, 65) passed away on Tuesday. He’d been dealing with complications from diatabes for years, including losing much of his vision, but he was also just as at a lucha libre expo in Puebla this past weekend. No cause of death is mentioned. Ramirez is the uncle of current CMLL wrestler Xelhua (and so the brother of former CMLL Puebla wrestler SWAT.) He is unrelated to Ciclon Ramirez Jr., who claims he bought the name from another wrestler. Ciclon Ramirez’s passing was a notable death in Mexican publications.
This man wrestled as Pegaso (I) before the Ciclon Ramirez character and Tiburon after it, but it was the Huracan Ramirez knockoff character that brought him the most success in the 80s and 90s. In rare (and mostly irrelevant) trivia, he managed to win five different welterweight championships. He was Occidente champion around 1984, the Mexico City welterweight champion around 1987, the national welterweight title in 1989, the CMLL welterweight champion in 1993, and the IWG welterweight champion at the end of his career in 2000. Ciclon appears well regarded despite being an early match wrestler for most of his career. The AAA exodus opened room for him to move up in CMLL a bit, and his memorable mask feud with Felino started in that first year after the split. Ciclon, under one name or another, was around CMLL from 1983 to 1997, a pretty good run. Rob has some good memories of Ciclon Ramirez.
