Negro Casas was the long running IWRG Intercontinental Middleweight Champion, but the majority of his reign was during a period where CMLL (where Negro Casas worked) and IWRG were no longer sharing talent. After four years of inactivity, IWRG announced a one night tournament for the vacant championship.
The tournament took place May 6, 2012, at Arena Naucalpan. All matches were one fall. Seeding was determined by a battle royal.
