Alcatraz (Sergio Mora) also passed away Saturday. He is a weird niche of a well-remembered named who wasn’t a big star. The presented story is he was a wrestler in the late 1980s in western Mexico, was featured in magazines, retired early due to injuries, and then became an announcer on the short-lived UWA TV show. He might have wrestled occasionally, but he was presented as a big star in those magazines because they were owned (at that point) by Benjamin Mora, his brother and promoter in Tijuana. The few results I have of him wrestling are all on Mora-promoted shows in Tijuana. It was a marketing campaign and would have to be considered successful if he’s still remembered 30 years later. The novelty of a masked man – one with a jail bar design – doing TV announcing makes him better remembered. The most serious Televisa presentation had to have “real sports” announcers; a masked man wouldn’t have worked for them. (Nowadays, Hechicero frequently announces for Televisa in the same role Alcatraz had.) The UWA TV show aired on a government-owned TV station – Imevision – which was in the process of failing even as UWA got a time slot, so they were given a lot more reign about what they wanted to do. | |||
