I know there is another Mr. Niebla. At first, I did consider lodging a formal complaint, and we even had a conversation to try to reach an agreement regarding the name issue—after all, if I were to return to the ring, who would people recognize as the real Mr. Niebla? But that would be very difficult; it would take me three or four years to get back up to speed, and I wouldn't be able to perform at the same level I did in my prime. Honestly, I’ve put that idea out of my mind. It would only hurt the young man, who actually performs very well—he’s a great talent. It’s better for him to keep moving forward; I know that wherever he appears, friends and fans will be reminded of me anyway, so why look for trouble? I wish the current Mr. Niebla the best of luck and hope he continues to succeed.
The story of Mr. Niebla begins in 1970, when I was booked to wrestle in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas. Before the 70s, I performed under the name José Guadalupe. There was a promoter — active in that city and in Monterrey — along with someone else in charge of booking, who offered to have me step into the ring as Mr. Niebla. At first, I refused, but they eventually convinced me because the original Mr. Niebla wasn't going to show up due to a personal issue. I agreed to do the booker a favor. I wrestled as Mr. Niebla in Victoria, and the local commission asked for my paperwork and license; I told them I didn't have them with me because they had been lost. I couldn't clarify that I wasn't the original character, or the event would have been cancelled. In the end, they let me step into the ring that night.
However, I was given an ultimatum: if I didn't present my license the following week, I wouldn't be allowed to wrestle there anymore. Once I was in Monterrey, I took my photo and documents to the commission, and they issued my ID as "Mr. Niebla." I returned to Tamaulipas, and from there, I was recommended for bookings in other parts of the country. The original Mr. Niebla from Monterrey is my great friend and colleague Ciclón Tovar; we had some differences at first, but we worked things out and ended up on good terms, parting ways amicably.
I must acknowledge, however, that the idea for the Mr. Niebla character originated with Ciclón Tovar; due to a twist of fate, I ended up adopting the persona. That is why, regarding the new Mr. Niebla — far from being angry — I fully support him using the name, since I didn't face major hurdles in acquiring it myself; all I ask is that he brings even more prestige to the character than it already has.
Modern-day professional wrestling is extremely wild—far removed from effective mat-based wrestling. What I learned is very different; long-time fans know that the real thing was practiced by the likes of Ciclón Veloz Jr., Solitario, Angel Blanco, Rene Guajardo, Ray Mendoza, Rayo de Jalisco, and Alfonso Dantes — great personalities, all of them. People can vouch for this; they sense the difference between the wrestling of the past and today’s version. Now, the focus is solely on the spectacle; they’ve turned it into nothing but acrobatics and theater. Wrestlers have traded effective holds and maneuvers for ladders, masks, and chairs.
The light shows, dry ice, and beautiful ring girls—who provide visual appeal—look great, but the actual wrestling match takes a back seat and gets forgotten. Fans have become accustomed to that kind of spectacle and sound, and authentic wrestling is gone; people attend for the thrill of the lights, the sound, and the girls. Effective wrestling no longer exists; a bit of its essence is lost every day.
Promoters care only about business—the money going into their pockets—regardless of whether they are presenting a circus act or a genuine wrestling match. They no longer look for quality talent; in the past, they demanded technical skill and knowledge for the good of the sport, and every promoter was a wrestler who knew this tough sport inside out. To be a good promoter, you need to be an active or retired wrestler. Nowadays, there are many outsiders who don't understand how the wrestling business works. Unfortunately, the audience plays a part in this too; if there are no light shows or ring girls, ticket sales drop and arenas don't fill up. I accept that reality, but I truly feel and see how this beautiful sport is deteriorating.
I have heart problems that I’m currently managing with medication. As soon as I get the all-clear, I’m going back to the gym—just to make my grandchildren happy and let them see me wrestle. If I were to return to the ring, I would like to face Satánico, Mongol Chino, and Carnicero Aguilar, and team up with my great friend Lizmark.
There is no better way to stay healthy than through consistent exercise; it keeps us in shape and clears the mind, and it is essential for remaining in the world of wrestling.
Fellow wrestlers have to cherish and fiercely protect the sport so that professional wrestling doesn't lose its credibility. One of my greatest satisfactions was teaming up with El Santo in places like Nuevo Laredo, Monclova, and Ciudad Victoria; it was a source of pride for me. My greatest wish was to meet El Santo without his mask. You see, all my colleagues—Blue Demon, Huracán Ramírez, El Solitario, Rayo de Jalisco, well, all of us—knew each other in the locker rooms where we would take off our masks; the only one who never unmasked was "The Silver One," and I was really curious to know what he looked like. On one occasion, we were scheduled to perform in Gómez Palacio, Durango. The Teacher asked the driver of the van we were traveling in if he could give him a ride back to Monterrey, since he had missed his flight. I got excited, thinking, "Now is the moment to meet the Teacher." I sat in the front seat, thinking, "This is where he has to get in." Sure enough, he got in and greeted us, and that was how I met the man I respected so much. About twenty days after that dream came true, the "Silver-Masked Man" passed away. I had tried to meet him before; I had shown up at the office of the "El Santo Fraternity"—which managed a group of wrestlers—and asked for the Teacher. He did receive me, but he was wearing his mask. I told myself, "Oh well, maybe next time."
One of my triumphs was appearing on a card at Arena México; for any wrestler, it is essential to step foot in the "Cathedral of Lucha Libre" in Mexico. Thank God I was given the opportunity to be booked there, even if not in the main event. While I *was* a main-eventer at Arena Coliseo (on Perú 77 Street), that was for the semi-final match, because the biggest stars headline the shows at Arena México. Performing at the Coliseo—that great arena—doesn't mean conquering the capital; the ultimate goal for any gladiator is to step into the ring at Arena México for the main event—that is what makes you a true master of the craft. That night, I faced El Tupamaro — a talented wrestler from Veracruz — in a one-on-one match, and it was a triumph to perform before the demanding crowd at Arena México.
Choosing a career in the wrestling ring is truly difficult when you have a family, as it entails a huge responsibility — especially during tours. One of the most gruelling was the Pacific Coast tour; we had to battle every day for a month, with only the company of fellow wrestlers. On that occasion, I had left enough money to cover expenses for the month, but ten days into the tour—while I was in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora — I received a telegram informing me that one of my sons was in critical condition after part of a house wall had collapsed on him. Yet, I couldn't return; we were tied to the tour. For one thing, I didn't have the money — some dates paid as little as 50 pesos, barely enough for food, and sometimes not even that; it was like doing charity work. I didn't have the fare or anyone to bring me back to Monterrey. I had no choice but to endure it, staying in touch with family only by phone since there was no direct line to my home. It was a harrowing tour, and I could no longer perform with my heart in it. Thank God it ended a week early, and they tried to send us back to Mexico City, but I refused. I told them, "No, gentlemen, I’m going to Monterrey because I have a very sick son, and I don't know what’s happening with him." As it turned out, there had been a mistake; I wasn't actually scheduled for the return trip. I went to the bus terminal to catch the first bus out, but the only option was to stand for the entire journey. That’s what I did, and everything turned out fine—my son recovered. Because of all the suffering involved, I tell my fellow wrestlers who love this difficult profession: respect it, and protect it.
The colleagues I remember most from that Pacific Coast tour are the Corso Brothers (known then as *Los Tigres del Ring*), El Trueno, La Araña Atómica, Rómulo Méndez, Franco Colombo, El Talismán, and Mr. Lancer. There were also El Tupamaro, Impacto, El Matemático, La Mosca, El Vagabundo, and many others whose names escape me now.
I lost my mask at the Monumental Monterrey arena during a tag-team match back in the Rene Guajardo era. My partners were Aníbal and Centurión Negro, facing off against Villano III, Corsario Negro, and Misterio Negro. The stipulation was that the first wrestler to submit would have to unmask. We actually forced Villano III to submit first, but the commission intervened; the referee denied it happened, sparking a controversy - he claimed Villano hadn't submitted. The crowd clearly saw the fraud, but the match continued, and I was the next one to be forced to submit. In that instance, both the commission and the referee agreed I was the loser. Like a true professional and out of respect for the audience, I unmasked — even though the fans were pleading for me to be spared, waving their white handkerchiefs in support. The commission, however, did not show that same support. I fulfilled my professional duty; my "executioner" was Villano, who held a grudge because I had been the one to make him submit earlier, and he wasn't about to give me a second chance.
After that, I took some time off; I didn't feel right without the mask. I stayed away from the ring in Nuevo León for a year before returning masked under a new name, in accordance with the Wrestling Commission's statutes.
I made my comeback as "Coliseo 2000," performing at the Monumental Monterrey thanks to Mr. Jesús Vega Sánchez (RIP). I didn't use that name for long; it was intended to promote a comic book featuring the character, but the character died in the story. "Coliseo 2000 Jr." then appeared, marking a new phase, but I eventually faded from the scene. I returned as "Justiciero Vengador" and wrestled under that name for a while until one night at the Arena Coliseo de Monterrey, where El Monje Negro unmasked me. I continued wrestling unmasked as "Mr. Niebla" for about a year before finally retiring.
I spent 20 years in the ring—16 of them as Mr. Niebla, a name I hold very dear.
My final match took place at the Arena Coliseo Monterrey, but the decision to quit came after a bout at a gym in the CNOP neighborhood. I got home, tossed my gear bag onto the patio, and said, "That’s the end of my wrestling career; I’m retiring." That poor bag sat forgotten on the patio for 15 days while I tried to shake the urge to keep wrestling — and it worked; I put the ring behind me, even though the sport of wrestling remains close to my heart.
Sometime in the not-too-distant future, you might just see Mr. Niebla in the ring again.
