The [[NWA]] stripped [[Rene Guajardo]] of the [[NWA World Middleweight Championship]] as part of a break up between Guajardo and [[EMLL]] in July of 1973. Guajardo left the promotion months earlier and defended the title multiple times against fellow EMLL departee [[El Solitario]]. EMLL pressed the [[NWA]] to get involved and the US alliance ruled Guajardo forfeited the belt by defending it on non-NWA shows.

EMLL held a tournament to decide a new champion on Friday nights in September 1974. All matches were held in [[Arena Mexico]].
