== Current Champion ==

[[El Mesias]] is currently in his second reign as AAA World Heavyweight Champion. He defeated [[Zorro]] in a decision match with [[Charly Manson]] as the special referee on 12/6/08 in Plaza de Toros La Concordia, Orizaba, Veracruz.

[[Cibernetico]] previously vacated the title on [[October 24]], [[2008]] at [[Beisbol Beto Avila]], [[Veracruz]] after a confrontation between champion [[Cibernetico]] and [[Konnan]], whose team had just won a cage match to make [[Konnan]] the man in charge of [[AAA]].

== History of Championship ==
The AAA World Heavyweight Championship was created to be the one grand championship in AAA. It's not the first attempt the promotion and people around it have tried with the concept: the [[IWC World Heavyweight Championship]] kinda had this purpose, while the [[AAA Campeón de Campeones Championship]] more explicitly tried to fill that void. Both belts failed, and became a part of the collection of miscellaneous championships held by AAA wrestlers. The goal of the initial tournament was to take those other titles out of play.

An [[AAA World Heavyweight Tournament, 2007|8 man tournament]] was held to determine the first champion. The rules, and structure, of the tournament appeared to change as the tournament was taking progress. The promotion seemed to, after the fact in some cases, stipulate that all tournament matches involving champions were also title matches were possible, causing some wrestlers to pick up book keeping title changes as things progressed.

The final match between Chessman and Mesias had hardcore match elements, as typical for AAA main event matches in this era. Mesias was injuried when a planned ladder dive went short. [[Cibernetico]] soon involved in himself in the match, and the referee awarded the match and the title to Mesias. Mesias was expected to win the championship, but the finish might have been changed due to the injury. Mesias was carried to medical help after the match.

At 13/06/09, in Palacio de los Deportes, Mexico City, Mexico,Dr. Wagner Jr. defeat Mesias in a historical match, and becomes AAA World Heavyweight Champion.
