== History ==
The principal title of the [[National Wrestling Alliance]], this title traces its lineage back to the turn of the 20th Century, descended from the battles of George Hackenschmidt, Frank Gotch, and [[Ed Strangler Lewis]]. The lineage was largely unbroken until the 1960's, when Vince McMahon Sr. continued to recognize Buddy Rogers as champion when he had actually lost the title. This created the [[WWF World Heavyweight Championship]].

The main branch of the belt (the one recognized by the NWA and its member promotions) continued through the 1990's until Ted Turner bought [[WCW]] and pulled out of the NWA. All NWA titiles were stripped and replaced with WCW titles, including the [[WCW World Heavyweight Championship]], [[WCW World Tag Team Championship]], and [[WCW United States Championship]].
The NWA later held tournaments in independent promotions to fill these vacancies, although the World Heavyweight championship necessitated two tournaments due to the actions of Eastern Championship Wrestling's Shane Douglas in the first, where he threw down the title and declared himself the World Heavyweight Championship of the newly-renamed (by Tod Gordon) [[Extreme Championship Wrestling]].

The NWA titles were defended on small independent shows throughout the United States from the mid 1990's to the early 2000's until [[Total Nonstop Action]] was established and purchased the rights to the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, as well as the NWA World Tag Team Championship. At noon on May 13, 2007, the NWA Board of Directors officially stripped Christian Cage of the NWA World Heavyweight Championship and immediately began a tournament (dubbed "Reclaiming the Glory") spanning the entire summer of 2007 to crown a new champion. == Relation to Lucha Libre ==
NWA World Heavyweight champions occasionally wrestled in Mexico and defended the championship. The belt itself, which is a Mexican design made in the early 1970s, has been used (with a long interruption in the 1980s) to the present day.

In 1978, [[Harley Race]] defended the championship against [[As Charro]] in Pachuca and [[El Halcon]] in [[Arena Mexico]] both on April 21st.

On October 25th, 2008 it changed hands for the first time in Mexico when [[Blue Demon Jr.]] defeated [[Adam Pearce]] to become the first Mexican masked wrestler to win the championship.

Mitsuo Momota was the second son of Rikidozan, the man who introduced professional wrestling to Japan in 1951. After his father's murder at the hands of yakuza gangsters in 1963, Momota laid low until he entered the Japan Wrestling Association dojo in 1969, intending to be a wrestler like his father. He debuted in 1970, at a time his father's students [[Giant Baba]] and [[Antonio Inoki]] were vying for supremacy within the promotion. In 1972, as Baba and Inoki went their separate ways, Momota chose to follow Baba into his new promotion, [[All Japan Pro Wrestling]].

Momota was never a big man like his father and this may have limited his exposure. In 1974-75 he showed up in Mexico under the name Rikidozan II, and learned the Lucha Libre style, particularly the Tope Suicida. Long before [[Gran Hamada]] or [[Tiger Mask]], Momota was the first Japanese to execute the move in front of a Japanese crowd. Nonetheless, despite his talent and parentage, Momota was long overlooked and only in 1989 was able to win a major title, the AJPW World Junior Heavyweight Title.

Momota remained a strong member of the All Japan undercard until 2000 when he moved yet again, to [[Mitsuharu Misawa]]'s [[Pro Wrestling NOAH]] venture, where he remains. Despite 36 years of career, Momota has not announced plans for retirement yet.

== History ==
The principal title of the [[National Wrestling Alliance]], this title traces its lineage back to the turn of the 20th Century, descended from the battles of George Hackenschmidt, Frank Gotch, and [[Ed Strangler Lewis]]. The lineage was largely unbroken until the 1960's, when Vince McMahon Sr. continued to recognize Buddy Rogers as champion when he had actually lost the title. This created the [[WWF World Heavyweight Championship]].

The main branch of the belt (the one recognized by the NWA and its member promotions) continued through the 1990's until Ted Turner bought [[WCW]] and pulled out of the NWA. All NWA titiles were stripped and replaced with WCW titles, including the [[WCW World Heavyweight Championship]], [[WCW World Tag Team Championship]], and [[WCW United States Championship]].
The NWA later held tournaments in independent promotions to fill these vacancies, although the World Heavyweight championship necessitated two tournaments due to the actions of Eastern Championship Wrestling's Shane Douglas in the first, where he threw down the title and declared himself the World Heavyweight Championship of the newly-renamed (by Tod Gordon) [[Extreme Championship Wrestling]].

The NWA titles were defended on small independent shows throughout the United States from the mid 1990's to the early 200's until [[Total Nonstop Action]] was established and purchased the rights to the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, as well as the NWA World Tag Team Championship. At noon on May 13, 2007, the NWA Board of Directors officially stripped Christian Cage of the NWA World Heavyweight Championship and immediately began a tournament (dubbed "Reclaiming the Glory") spanning the entire summer of 2007 to crown a new champion. A new champion will be crowned on September 1, 2007 in Puerto Rico, as Bryan Danielson will compete against Brent Albright in the finals of "Reclaiming the Glory."

This WWA World Heavyweight Championship is the revival of the old WWA (Los Angeles) World Heavyweight title which started in 1958 when Edouard Carpentier defeated NWA World Heavyweight Champion Lou Thesz but was not awarded the NWA belt due to a technicality. In 1968, however, the WWA promotion rejoined the NWA and the WWA belt was abandoned.

The WWA revival was done around Bill Anderson, a former rookie in the NWA Los Angeles promotion which closed in 1982.
