== Biography ==

When it comes to popularity, Blue Demon is, along with [[El Santo]], the biggest mainstream lucha superstar [[Mexico]] ever had.

Demon was born on [[April 24]], [[1922]] in [[Villa de García]], a small town in [[Nuevo León]], though he was registered in [[Los Rodriguez]], [[Coahuila]], a town located near the border of [[Coahuila]] and [[Nuevo León]]. He was the fifth kid of a 12 children family, all maintained by their father, who worked as a agriculturist. When Demon was still very young, his parents moved to [[Rinconada]], where he attended school. He dropped out of it, as he saw no point in studying because there wasn't a lot of future in his little town. After an unsuccessful try to become a musician, he moved to [[Monterrey]] to live with his uncles and his aunt.

He got a job at the railway station, and there he met the brother of his friend Franklin Hernández - the lucha legend [[Rolando Vera]]. Vera saw potential in the kid and trained him for several non-combat sports at a local gym. Demon was a huge youngster, and his hands were especially big. After being told about lucha and despite the fact that he didn't really know what was going on the business or how was it like, the young Demon knew he wanted to be a luchador like his mentor.

After extensive physical training, Demon tried amateur wrestling and ended up undefeated with a 8-0 record, and then he tried freestyle wrestling as well.

One day a promoter spoke to Vera about sending some wrestlers for a lucha program in [[Laredo]], [[Texas]], and without really expecting it, the future Blue Demon had his debut on [[March 31]], [[1948]], wrestling under his real name and defeating [[Chema López]].

After that fight, Vera had a good idea for him. He told his young protegé that he'd wear a blue mask with silver decorations, blue trunks and blue boots, and that his new name was going to be "Blue Demon". The disciple had no objection about it because he knew that Rolando's ideas were always good. Since that day, he decided that the Blue mask would become his heart and soul.

He obviously started off wrestling in [[Monterrey]] while still keeping a normal life when not under the hood, as he never stopped working in the railway station. In his debut as Blue Demon he scored a win over [[Benny Arcilla]].

[[EMLL]] president [[Salvador Lutteroth]] once sent one of his talent scouts, [[Jesus Lomelí]], to give a look to some American lady wrestlers that were performing on [[Nuevo Laredo]], however Jesús arrived a day earlier so he attended a card in [[Monterrey]]. When Demon went to get his payoff as usual, the [[Arena Monterrey]] promoter [[Jesús Garza Hernández]] gave him something that Lomelí had left there for him: it was a recommendation letter so he could go to wrestle to [[Mexico City]] anytime he wanted to.

He told Vera about that letter and they intensified the training, and Vera also taught him how to behave when in [[Mexico City]]. Demon's [[Mexico City]] debut was on [[September]] of [[1948]]. His first match was at the old [[Arena Mexico]] against [[Ciclón Veloz]], and he lost in two straight falls... both by being disqualified! He really got over as a "rudo" after that fight and he caused a sudden impact in the [[Mexico City]] wrestling scene. He decided to stay in [[Mexico City]], so he left his job at the railway station for good, and his wife and his little son moved to the capital with him.

Around [[1952]] he was already fighting versus top wrestlers of the promotion in a regular basis. On [[November 7]] of that same year, the arguably most important match in the history of lucha libre was hold - [[El Santo]] defeated [[Black Shadow]] (Alejandro Cruz Ortíz) in a mask vs. mask match. Blue Demon, who was seconding Shadow on that match, promised he'd avenge the mask loss of his "brother", because on the wrestling world, Shadow and Demon were billed as real-life brothers.

Demon turned full-time tecnico and that probably was the wisest business decision he ever took, as he started feuding with the top rudo in [[Mexico]] - [[El Santo]]. They feuded all over [[Mexico]] (Demon teamed with Shadow, while [[Santo]]'s partner was [[Gory Guerrero]]) and made a lot of money together. On [[August]], [[1953]], Demon and [[Santo]] had their first singles match ever and Demon surprisingly defeated [[Santo]] in two straight falls, which gave him the right to challenge [[Santo]] for the [[NWA Welterweight title]] he owned in a match that happened on [[September 25]], [[1953]] at La [[Arena Coliseo]]. In what is usually referred as the most important match from his career, Demon defeated [[Santo]] in three falls to win that Welterweight title, which he'd keep for 4 years and a half, until [[Karloff Lagarde]] defeated him the [[January 31|31st of January]] of [[1958]].

Other of Demon's classic encounters was the draw between Los Hermanos Shadow ([[Black Shadow]] & Blue Demon) and the rudísimo team of [[Cavernario Galindo]] and [[El Santo]], which was voted the [[1953]] Match of The Year in [[Mexico]] by the media.

Some reports say that in [[1955]], Blue Demon captured the National Welterweight Title, but this has never been either confirmed or denied as there's a hole on the title history of that belt during the [[1945]]-to-[[1956]] period. What is known for a fact, is that on [[April 4]], [[1962]] captured that same title defeating [[Karloff Lagarde]] in [[Mexico City]]. He would lose that title six months later, and he wouldn't taste gold again until [[July 30|07/30]]/[[1976]], when he defeated Mano Negra in a match for Mexican Welter title that Fishman had vacated; and it was [[Fishman]] who defeated Demon to regain the title on [[February 27]], [[1977]].

Demon's first serious injury was on [[July]], [[1957]] during a fight against El [[Espectro]] in [[Tampico]]. After a wicked head-first impact on the ringpost he fractured his skull and during seven months, he was out wearing an ortophedic mechanism that kept his neck immobile.

After his return, Demon had his first fallout with [[EMLL]]. There was a problem with the transport, as without previous announcement he was sent to different places in a truck instead of being sent by plane. After many miles he became really frustrated and when he was in [[El Paso]], [[Texas]], visiting his old friend [[Gory Guerrero]], he had two fights for the promotion he was starting there and earned enough money to return to [[Mexico]] by plane. The promoter, Gorila Ramos, and the [[EMLL]] board of directives were upset with Demon for fighting for Guerrero without permission. The board, Lutteroth included, had a meeting with Demon probably to tell him about the punishment they had for him, but before they could even speak, he told them that he was very grateful to them for what they had done for him in the past but that he was leaving.

So, pretty much like [[Santo]], [[Gory Guerrero|Guerrero]] and the other big stars of his era, he became a free agent and wrestled all over [[Mexico]], [[New York]], several Southern [[U.S.]] cities and [[Latin America]], which allowed him to have more free time to devote to the parallel acting career he was just starting. Many of those films were productions he co-starred with [[Santo]]. [[Santo]] turned tecnico in [[1963]] and despite their on-screen partnership, they were still considered intense rivals until [[1968]], which was the first time they teamed.

Demon, who never left lucha, suffered his most important injury during [[1965]]. During a match against [[Cavernario Galindo]] in [[Oaxaca]], Demon fell through the ropes outside the ring and due to the collision on the floor one of his blood vessels broke. Despite the fact that the doctor told him not to eat anything, Demon had dinner and a few minutes later he lost conscience, fell off the stairs and fractured his skull again. He was other whole year out but he eventually returned to the ring.

From then on and until his retirement, he kept wrestling all over the places mentioned earlier, and he made several other films. Also, around the mid 70s he helped in the training of several young wrestlers at the [[Arena Mexico]] gym. One of those wrestlers is [[Ringo Mendoza]]. He eventually opened his own gym as well, the "Blue Demon Gym" located at [[Colonia Moctezuma]] in [[Mexico City]].

In [[1989]] Demon decided that it was time to say goodbye and he started his retirement tour. His [[Arena Mexico]] retirement saw him, his son [[Blue Demon Jr.]] and [[Ringo Mendoza]] go over the team of [[Emilio Charles Jr.]], [[Pirata Morgan]] and [[Satanico]]. His [[Tijuana]] retirement was a [[Promociones Mora]] match in which he, his son and [[Alcatraz]] (one of the sons of [[Benjamin Mora Sr.]]) went over [[Hijo del Gladiador]], [[Kahoz]] and [[Leon Chino]]. But the big "retirements" were in the place that saw him mature as a wrestler - [[Monterrey]]. He wasn't actually going to wrestle a retirement match in [[Monterrey]] but the promoters had quite a big and espectacular retirement planned for him, an offer he obviously accepted. On [[July 30]], [[1989]] he unmasked one of the biggest legends of the 70s - El [[Rayo de Jalisco]]. As if that wasn't enough, Demon's last match on [[August 22]] was another mask vs. mask match, this time he took the hood of [[El Matematico]], a quite popular wrestler in the 70s and 80s as well.

On January of [[1996]], [[AAA]] ran a very controversial angle involving Demon. Blue Demon and [[Ray Mendoza]] were being honored in the ring for their careers when [[Pierroth]] came to the ring, rip up Demon's diploma and attacked him. This angle wouldn't be so weird to see in the US, but this was something never seen before in [[Mexico]] and it gave the already over [[Pierroth]] way more heel heat to the point that crowds anywhere would be about to riot just after he appeared in the entrance way. Due to the success of this angle, on [[August]] [[1998]] they ran a similar angle again. He and his son were presenting a little kid with a mask, and then rising superstar [[Abismo Negro]] ran in, attacked the junior and then he tried to piledrive the senior, though in the end the junior saved his father from such a lethal move. This angle was supposed to skyrocket both [[Blue Demon Jr.|Demon Jr.]] and [[Abismo Negro|Abismo]]'s careers, however the only man whose career got skyrocketed was [[Abismo Negro|Abismo]]..

On [[October 27]], [[2000]], [[EMLL]] held the first "[[Leyenda Azul]]" tournament at [[Arena México]], in honor of Blue Demon. [[Blue Panther]] defeated in the finals of the elimination match to win the trophy (which was actually a belt). Also, Demon was presented with a medal by the late [[Cavernario Galindo]]'s son.

Blue Demon, Alejandro Muñoz Moreno, died on [[December 16]], [[2000]] around 11:45 AM, at age 78. Later on the day, he had a funeral service at the funerary Lopez García, located at Versalles street in Colonia Juarez. Many personalities of the cinema and lucha world (including [[Hombre Bala]], [[Pompín]], [[Nygma]], [[El Dollar]], [[Fantasma]], [[Charles Bronson Mexicano]], [[Black Shadow]], [[Roberto "Güero" Rangel]], [[Huracán Ramirez]], [[Ringo Mendoza]] and [[Bestia Salvaje]]) attended the funeral service. He was buried a day later, around 2:00 PM at the Panteón Parque Memorial, in [[Naucalpan]], [[Mexico City]].

After traveling on the [[Mexico City]] subway (Metro Polero station) he had a heart attack in the streets of [[Victoria]] and [[Insurgentes Norte]]. He liked to travel alone, and used the subway regularly as he didn't like taxis and he couldn't drive at his age. [[Blue Demon Jr.]] said to the media that he was called and he could see his father still alive and took him home, but he died in his arms while he was getting medical services. He was survived by his wife Gregoria "Goyita" Lomelí, his daughter Marla, his sons Alejandro and [[Blue Demon Jr.]], and his seven grandchildren.

Demon was a man that always kept in shape. He woke up between 6-7 AM every day and he went to the gym almost every day (he was in fact returning from the gym when he died) and he had never had any heart problems in the past.

Demon's legacy is still alive, not only because we have all the memories, as [[Blue Demon Jr.]] is an active professional wrestler. Like Blue Demon himself said: "If the silver legend of [[Santo]] can continue, the blue legend will continue as well!". Adios Blue Demon.

The '''International Gran Prix''' is an annual professional wrestling tournament held by [[CMLL|Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre]] (CMLL). It was held for the first time in [[1994]] and was last held in [[2008]]. On [[May 24]], [[2016]] was announced the return of the tournament for its twelfth edition after eight years of inactivity. The tournament is featured by 16 wrestlers, divided in two groups: Team Mexico (CMLL), and Team International (Japanese, American, and Puerto Rican wrestlers, among others) in a Torneo Cibernético-style in which the last survivor wrestler wins the trophy.

Tournament held on [[July 26]], [[2008]] in the [[Arena México]]. [[Alex Shelley]] defeated [[Último Guerrero]] in the finals of tournament to become the eleventh winner. This year's match was featured by [[TNA]] wrestlers as the majority of the International squad, who avenged their loss to CMLL in the [[TNA World X Cup]]. Guerrero's mask was pulled off by Shelley near the finish, which he claimed was illegal and should cause an overturned finish. Earlier in the same match, Guerrero fouled Styles to eliminate him.<ref>Some sources listed [[Christopher Daniels]] as part of Team International instead of [[Johnny Devine]], but actually is a wrong statement.</ref>

== Profile ==

Presumably, either a protege or relative of [[Babe Rap]], who originally used this gimmick. Monterrey/Nuevo Leon wrestler who worked dark matches on AAA tapings in the area. Came to DF to try out for AAA in the summer of 2009, but was talked into trying out for CMLL instead and made it. CMLL already had a [[Principe Valiente Jr.|Principe]] at the time, so they changed this one's name to Diamante. Joins a big of new early match wrestlers for CMLL as a tecnico. Zoomed up CMLL cards in 2010, winning his first title in 2011. Featured in new/young starts in 2011 and 2012, usually finishing well but not winning. Continued moving up the cards as CMLL emphasized it's younger wrestlers, but seemed to lose the interest the promotion originally had in him and newer guys have already leaped past him. Switched look dramatically in mid-2012, to a silver/black look obviously supposed to resemble [[El Santo]] (though both he and the promotion both strongly disagree there is any resemblance), but the new look did not bring a lot of new success. Surprisingly won the vacant [[Occidente Heavyweight Championship]] over [[Misterioso Jr.]], but lost in his first defense.

Stalled out in CMLL after early success, quietly leaving the promotion in 2013. Wrestled a bit in [[Lucha Libre Elite]] in 2016 and 2017, but generally was a sporadically wrestling indie luchador in the [[Toryumon Mexico]] orbit. Ended up traveling with [[Ultimo Dragon]] first to AJPW and later to Dragon Gate, where he became a regular in 2020.

Interesting fact: Diamante's current mask was made by [[Hooligan]].

After being unmasked, the newly-renamed Luis Mante became the first Mexican top champion of not just Dragon Gate, but of ''any'' Japanese promotion.

== Biography ==

He began his career as Silver King in the Universal Wrestling Association and lost his mask early to [[El Hijo del Santo]]. He formed a tag team with [[El Texano]] called "The Cowboys" and the tandem saw success with a UWA and WWA World Tag Team title reigns and an appearance on [[WCW]]'s Clash of the Champions XIX in 1992 being defeated by The Fabulous Freebirds. In 1993, Texano and Silver King jumped to Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre where they continued their success by winning the vacant CMLL tag titles. In singles competition, Silver King feuded with veterans such as Scorpio and Emilio Charles, Jr. and he won the CMLL World Heavyweight title by defeating Black Magic Norman Smiley in 1994. In 1996, he and his brother Dr. Wagner, Jr. defeated Dos Caras and Último Dragón to win the vacant CMLL World Tag-Team titles but in 1997, Silver King joined WCW full time and gave up his half of the title.

Other than a Cruiserweight title challenge against Juventud Guerrera on the 1998 Fall Brawl pay-per-view, he did not receive much of a push, mostly wrestling in opening matches, even though he was a member of the short-lived Latino World Order. He began teaming with El Dandy as Los Fabulosos with Stacy Keibler managing but when Vince Russo took over booking, most of the luchadores in WCW's employ were released or given a much smaller role. After leaving WCW, he returned to CMLL and began wrestling for CMLL's Japanese affiliate, New Japan Pro Wrestling. In 2001, he adopted the "Black Tiger" character previously used by Eddie Guerrero. As Black Tiger, he wrestled several tours with New Japan and had an unsuccessful IWGP Tag Team Championship attempt with his brother against Jushin Liger and El Samurai in 2001. In 2003, New Japan used Mexican wrestlers less and less so Black Tiger wrestled mostly for CMLL, usually as Dr. Wagner, Jr.'s back-up. However, since Black Tiger was supposed to be Japanese (for the Mexican storyline - New Japan had always given the Black Tiger character to a foreigner), the relationship was not publicly recognized by CMLL even when Tiger, Wagner and Universo 2000 won the CMLL World Trios title that year.

After losing the title to Canek, Black Warrior and Rayo de Jalisco, Jr. in 2004, Dr. Wagner, Jr. turned técnico (face) when Dr. Wagner, Sr. died. This left Tiger without much to do and he wrestled mainly in IWRG, Arena Coliseo, CMLL's secondary arena, or he filled in holes in Arena Mexico cards. In 2005, Rocky Romero debuted as New Japan's new Black Tiger. González continued to use the name but CMLL decided to repackage him as "El Bronco." His debut, where he teamed with Elektro (a wrestler from AAA) and L.A. Park against the original members of Los Guerreros del Infierno, was a huge failure. The crowd did not buy Elektro or Bronco and a rematch set for next week on top of the Gran Alterntiva tournament was quickly changed with Hijo del Lizmark and Místico filling in and Bronco replacing Lizmark in the tournament. Elektro was never used again and Bronco was used occasionally in midcard roles. Despite the name change in CMLL, he continued to wrestle as "Black Tiger" in IWRG and in independent promotions. After months of delays due to injuries, he finally lost the Black Tiger mask to L.A. Park in his hometown of Torreón and began wrestling as Silver King again. He appears in Paramount Pictures' Nacho Libre as RAMSES, in which he dons a golden mask.

== 2008-2009 ==

Silver King left CMLL to work for AAA. He returned to the ring once again donning a mask. He turned on the AAA version of La Parka and joined [[La Legion Extranjera]]. He continued his feud with La Parka throughout the year. Once La Legion Extranjera was disbanded he joined forces with his real life brother Dr. Wagner Jr. and formed a new stable called [[Wagner Maniacos|Los Wagner Maniacos]].

== Mask Controversy ==

Silver King was prohibited to wrestle in the Triplemania 17 event while wearing a mask. This was brought about by the President of the Boxing and Wrestling commission in Mexico, [[El Fantasma]]. The argument was that since Silver King had previously lost his mask in Mexico, he would not be allowed to wrestle wearing the mask. Silver King did perform in the event without his mask, donning face paint instead.

The following [[TripleMania XVIII|TripleMania]], Silver King wrestled for the [[AAA World Tag Team Championship|tag team title championship]] while wearing his mask. After the show, it was explained Silver King had gotten a license under the name '''Silver Kain''', and was allowed to wrestle under a mask using that identity.

 The original L'Ange Blanc ("The White Angel") was a well-known masked wrestler in France during the 1950s and 60's. Although his real name was Francisco Pino. While he was from Spain, French wrestling fans claimed him as their own. To date, he is still the biggest star French wrestling has ever had, much bigger than André the Giant. He was almost as popular in France as Santo was in Mexico. L'Ange Blanc was enigmatic and one of the first aerial wrestlers during the heyday of French wrestling.

 After being unmasked in England, he changed his name to El Angel Blanco (which means the same thing but in Spanish)

 He worked in USA (as Pancho Pino) and Mexico under the name of El Angel Exterminator (The Exterminating Angel) because in Mexico already existed another Angel Blanco, in luchas de apuestas wins the hair of Black Shadow and ends up losing his mask with El Angel Blanco in 1967.

CMLL midcard tecnico of the early to mid 2000s, part of a generation of guys who seemed to stall in the midcard without accomplishing much. Wrestled as Metro, a sponsored character of the newspaper, in 2006. Disappeared from the main CMLL roster in 2009, but still works in the related [[Arena Coliseo Guadalajara]]. == Other Notes ==

The main event at Verano De Escandalo 1997 continued the feud that had been building for a few months between the Aguayos & Heavy Metal against Picudo, Sangre Chicana & Cobarde. On this night Cobarde was the ultimate loser and got what little hair he had shaved off. Out of embarassment he began wearing a blonde wig on future TV tapings. This feud would continue on with Picudo ultimately losing his hair at Guerra De Titanes and finally Chicana losing his hair at Rey De Reyes '98.

However, the big news from this show occured in the semi-main event. Canek & Cibernetico had been feuding for weeks leading up to this show. Cibernetico always seemed to have the upper-hand as his recently created stable called Los Vipers (Histeria, Maniaco, Mosco De La Merced, Abismo Negro) would interfere in matches and attack Canek. The cage match was signed with the stipulation that no Vipers members could interfere on Cibernetico's behalf. Canek dominated the match and had Cibernetico beaten and bloody. Suddenly Cibernetico began to motion for someone to come out and help him but nobody came out from the back. The camera scanned the crowd and caught Psicosis standing on an elevated platform watching the match. This was strange because Psicosis had left AAA over a year ago and it was a very public bitter split. After watching for a few minutes Psicosis ran down the aisle and jumped into the cage to attack Canek causing the match to become a no-contest. The angle caused huge controversy in the weeks following as it was revealed Antonio Pena had stuck Tijuana local wrestler Leon Negro under the Psicosis outfit and was going to try to pass him off as the real Psicosis.

Two of the undercard matches on the show had angles that went nowhere. In the trios match with Octagon, a mystery man in black showed up to attack Octagon. The man would appear in the crowd on future AAA TV tapings but it was never revealed who he was (the actual person under the mask was the ex-Black Demon). The other angle occured in the opener as Al Capone and Frank Nitti turned on their partner Goyo but that ended up being one of the last appearence of Los Hampones in AAA so that storyline was dropped.

== Biography ==

Part of a wrestling family, but portrayed as an orphan who learned the sport from mentor [[Fray Tormenta]], Mistico debuted in [[CMLL]] in 2004. Mistico rose to the top of the promotion at a record pace, and was arguably the top star in the promotion a year later.

Mistico is one of the bigfest stars of Lucha Libre. His name being part of a wrestling card can draw thousands of extra fans, regardless of the matchup. He's crossed over to Mexican popular culture and been featured on television shows and music videos.

Mistico is actually a man from a family of wrestlers, and is the nephew of CMLL official [[Tony Salazar]]. He'd been wrestling under different names since at least the beginning of the decades. Directly prior to being Mistico, he was Astro Boy (taking the name from a deceased brother), an spectacular undercard wrestler who also wrestled in Japan from time to time.

In 2003, CMLL's fans told the promotion that they wanted to see more new stars, and CMLL tried to fulfill the request with [[Sagrado]], a devoutly religious young high flying babyface who was promoted as a trainee of famous wrestling priest [[Fray Tormenta]]. Sagrado flopped out of the gate, with the blame being shifted towards Sagrado's ringwork (he was nervous and he wasn't ready for that spot), CMLL decided to recycle the entire concept with a different wrestler.

A year later, Mistico debuted, which much the same back story, while Sagrado was downplayed to avoid focus on the similarities. Mistico might have previously been passed over for being a smaller wrestler, even by Mexico standards, but his spectacular moves (and his ability not to screw them up) made him the exactly exciting new young guy fans wanted.

In Febuary 2011 signed with the [[WWE]] and took on the name of Sin Cara. Wrestled as a singles wrestler as well as forming a team with [[Rey Mysterio Jr.]]. In January 2014 he was released by WWE and returned to Mexico.

Joined [[AAA]] under a new name of Myzteziz. At [[Heroes Inmortales VIII]], Myzteziz won a Royal Rumble Lumberjack match to win the Copa Antonio Peña. On May 24, 2015, Myzteziz came together with two former WWE superstars [[El Patrón Alberto]] and [[Rey Mysterio Jr.]] to form the "Dream Team" for AAA's Lucha Libre World Cup. The trio eventually won the tournament, defeating [[Johnny Mundo]], [[Matt Hardy]] and [[Mr. Anderson]] in the finals. On August 9 at [[Triplemanía XXIII]], Myzteziz was defeated by Mysterio in what was billed as a "dream match". Following the match, Myzteziz turned heel, attacking Mysterio and beginning a feud between the two.

On the 10/9/15 CMLL Arena Mexico show, Myzteziz made a surprise appearance to announce he was returning to Arena Mexico for a [[All Elite|Lucha Libre Elite]] show on 10/25. He also said he would be changing his name as AAA owns the Myzteziz name. AAA responded days later by announcing on social media that they had released Myzteziz. In reality, AAA did not know of Myzteziz plan to appear at Arena Mexico until hours before it happened. So they only released him after but legal action could still come for Myzteziz for breaking his contract with AAA. He eventually settled on the name '''Caristico''' and his new gear will use aspects of all his previous identities (Mistico, Sin Cara, Myzteziz).

It is speculated that he left AAA because he was not the main star (that being Rey jr. next being Alberto el Patron) & because he had issues with Alberto el Patron which could not be resolved to which they could not work together anymore.

Every name Mistico's used, someone else has also used. It hasn't always been planned that way, but it can be a bit confusing.

== Biography ==


There's a lot of mystery, especially for those English speakers that live outside of Mexico, surrounding the death, life and career of Villano II. He's seen by many as the unknown Villano. There's not a lot information of him around, but that's even in the Mexican media. This profile, is going to try to solvent that to a minor extent.

Jose Díaz, better known as [[Ray Mendoza]], got married to Lupita Mendoza and they had a big family. Their children were José de Jesús ([[Villano I]]), José Alfredo ([[Villano II]], affectively known by close friends as "Pepe"), Arturo ([[Villano III]]), Rita Marina, Leonor, [[Villano V]], Lupita and [[Villano IV]], in that order.

Wishing to be pro wrestlers like his father, the two older brothers started training with him and [[Bobby Bonales]], who actually did the workload since Ray was wrestling a full schedule. Both had a solid base behind to start training as both were accomplished amateurs, especially José Alfredo who always was involved in local tournaments and won several, one of them on July of [[1962]] defeating none other than [[Adolfo Bolanes Jr.]] in the finals. As a funny thing, that same day Arturo, or may I say Arturito, won the under 27 kilos (60 pounds) tournament by defeating a kid called [[Alfonso Moreno]] in the final match.

José had his first rivalry against, of all people, [[Chavo Guerrero]], son of none other than the great [[Gory Guerrero]]. Both wrestlers were very green and in the first stage of their careers, but it was an interesting feud in the minor circuits because their fathers had been rivals at [[Arena Mexico]].

The future Villano II and his older brother went through several names, including Las Bestias Negras and Los Bufalos Salvajes, until under advice of [[Jorge Allende]] and the original [[Fantasma de la Quebrada]] (not the AAA one) they changed to Los Villanos.

The Villanos started making some noise at the arenas in Mexico State, outside Mexico City, especially Naucalpan which was considered to be their home base. They got their seasoning and eventually worked for [[EMLL]], mostly at [[Arena Coliseo]].

Since by late [[1974]] the power heads in EMLL changed and Ray Mendoza was not too happy about that, the whole Mendoza-Villano family (at that point just Ray and the first three Villanos) left and moved onto the brand new [[UWA]] promotion where due to political reasons they all got a push to several degrees, though in all honestly they deserved and were more than ready for it and in fact they didn't deceive anyone.

But the career of Villano II seemingly went unnoticed, as he disappeared without much of a reasoning ever being given, though actually it was due to some legal problem. He wrestled some here and there, when he had a chance, but died a very mysterious death on [[April 17]], [[1989]]. I believe the "official" cause of his death was the [[El Solitario|Solitario]] thing of dying because of his wrestling injuries, though he had actually fallen on a terrible depression and hung himself in his house in Naucalpan because of that.

The death of José Alfonso left a very sad mark in the family, and we can see that looking at details like Villano I never being the same worker again (not to say he ever was bad, in fact he was always great) and even though he was involved full time with the UWA promotion and was training tons, and I mean tons, of young wrestlers in the [[Felipe Ham Lee|Ham Lee]] gym, there was talk that he was there only out of loyalty. And every time Villano III is having an interview and the subject of his deceased brother (or now brothers) pops up, he loses his voice and starts visibly crying.

Villano II was a very good worker, as one may expect coming from that family. It is hard to rate the five brothers among themselves, because even though it's almost universally agreed that Villano III was in his good years the best worker and biggest star, all of them are so similar in style. But many times I have talked to people familiar with all five brothers and they have agreed with me that he was right in the middle of a brothers ranking. Though in all reality, as said before names are interchangeable because style and size is basically the same.

To end this sad note with a funny curiosity, in his free time Villano II was a talented freelance artist.

== Biography ==

Canek is one of the most charismatic wrestlers Mexico has ever had, one of the biggest lucha box-office draws ever and also a well-known wrestler in Japan, as he'd often tour for Antonio Inoki's New Japan Pro Wrestling during the 80s.

Canek, who was an impressive athlete during all his life and a former bodybuilder and amateur wrestler, made his professional debut as El Universitario at age 18. The history goes like this: [[El Matematico]] no showed a main-event at the Arena Jardín, so the promoter (a part time wrestler called Black Bat II) asked the young man him to sub Matematico. So that day, "Universitario" teamed with El Angel Azul (Blue Angel) to take on El Profeta and El Chilango García. Several months after that fight, his first partner, Angel Azul, sold him one of his outfits and then El Príncipe Azul (Blue Prince) was born. Under that name he was quite successful, as he took the mask and then the hair of Ultratumba, and also the hair of El Noruego, plus that same year 1972 he was prized with the best wrestler of Villahermosa, Tabasco award. It should be noted that the wrestlers that first trained him were Indio Azteca, Maciste, El Remington I and El Chacal.

He later decided to get a new name, so he came up with the name Canek, based on the name of the Mayan warrior Jacinto Canek. Canek's debut match also happened to be during the 1st card ever at a new building that later would become one of the most important Mexican arenas during the 80s: [[Toreo de Cuatro Caminos, Naucalpan, Estado de México | El Toreo De Cuatro Caminos]]. That 24th of March of 1973, [[Gallo Tapado]] and [[Chicano Power]] fought "Kanek" (spelled like that) and [[TNT]] in the main event, while [[As Charro]] and [[Tony Salazar]] faced El Lince and El Cóndor in the semi main-event.

In Mexico City, Canek started training with the Mexican-Korean former wrestler [[Felipe Ham Lee]], [[Sugi Sito]], and the original Fantasma de la Quebrada, at the Ham Lee Gym. Some time later, Ham Lee got [[René Guajardo]] to book Canek for a few tours around Northern Mexico, but in the first match Canek had a bad day and he was so terrible that Guajardo sent him back to Mexico City. However, some time later, Guajardo was in the capital and saw Canek again, but this time Canek put on a hell of a match so René invited The Mayan Prince to wrestle for his promotion during a whole year. There, Canek won the Northern Mexico Heavyweight Title defeating Jose Torres, the masks of El Destroyer (Marco Tulio, Antifaz's dad), [[Lemus]], and the hair of Sunny War Cloud, Ruben Juarez, and the same Jose Torres.

In 1975, Francisco Flores decided to try to finish with EMLL's monopoly of the lucha libre business in Mexico and create a big independent promotion. The 29th of January, the UWA (Universal Wrestling Association) was born, and it had a debut card full of stars, a show in which Canek wrestled too, teaming with Dory Dixon and Sunny War Cloud to lose against the dream team of [[Mil Mascaras]], [[Ray Mendoza]] and [[El Solitario]]. In this new promotion, Canek wrestled as a rudo.

Canek started to rise to real stardom after he won the National Light Heavyweight Title defeating "El Galeno Del Mal" [[Dr. Wagner]] the 15th of January of 1978 in Mexico City. He'd lose that title a few months later (June 20, 78) against [[Dos Caras]] in Pachuca, Hgo. This was the start of one of Mexico's most important rivalries ever.

With [[Mil Mascaras]] out of the country most of the time cashing the big paychecks from Japanese and American promoters, and Guajardo and Mendoza getting older, the UWA needed a new generation of leaders, and Canek and [[Dos Caras]] were perfect for those positions. As Dos Caras would join his brother Mascaras on his Japan tours most of the time, Canek became "the chosen one". The 27th of September of 1978, Canek defeated Lou Thesz to get his first ever UWA World Heavyweight Title reign. By defeating Thesz, Canek gained international exposure. Around the same time, the UWA got a talent trading deal with the New Japan Pro Wrestling office. Japanese superstars like [[Antonio Inoki]] or [[Riki Choshu]] would come to Mexico to wrestle against Canek, and also, Canek would travel to Japan to face superstars like [[Tiger Mask]] or [[Tatsumi Fujinami]].

Canek's big matches against the foreign superstars at the UWA headquarters of El Toreo de Naucalpan drew huge gates to the point that this formula kept being used for more than a decade. New Japan would send a couple of their big stars at a time, those would usually trade the UWA title with Canek just to lose it in the big re-match a couple of months later.

In October of 1983, Canek vacated the UWA title and decided to try wrestling in the US. He had already wrestled in the States, as he participated in the '81 and '82 editions of the New Japan hosted MSG Tag Leagues (first teaming with Super Maquina, then with [[Perro Aguayo]]) and the '70 edition of the MSG singles tournament, but this time he went to wrestle in Texas. After three weeks he decided he preferred to wrestle in Mexico, though in the future he had several other small So-Cal and Northern Texas tours, and in the late 80s he wrestled many times at Los Angeles' Olympic Auditorium.

During the 80s he basically main evented the UWA cards against every foreign big name available. Some of his most memorable matches were the one in which he defended his UWA title bodyslamming and defeating Andre the Giant in two straight falls (Feb 12, 84), his 3rd fall draw against Hulk Hogan (Sept 2, 84), and his title defense against "The Lariat" Stan Hansen (Sept 30, 84) which he won via DQ. Of course Canek would also defend and trade his UWA title with national talent, in fact, from mid-83 to late-89 the UWA wouldn't have a foreign heavyweight champ (though Killer had a foreign rudo gimmick). Some of the national workers Canek wrestled against were [[Perro Aguayo]], [[Scorpio]], [[Enrique Vera]], [[Villano III]] and [[Dos Caras]].

But "los independientes" (name that the UWA and its wrestlers received) had so many important wrestlers that many times they booked big tag team main events, like the 16th of Jan, 82 when [[Perro Aguayo]] and Canek drew against Tamba and Andre The Giant, or the time (around Jul-Aug, 82) the weird team of Hulk Hogan and [[Gran Hamada]] defeated Aguayo and Canek.

The UWA kept using the Canek vs. foreign challengers formula to death using other talent like Pat Patterson, Big Van Vader, Vampiro, Buffalo Allen (Bad News Brown), P. N. News, [[Konnan]], Ricky Santana, Miguelito Perez, King Haku (Meng), Bam Bam Bigelow and Kokina (Yokozuna). However from 1992 to 1994, with the rising popularity of AAA, the UWA kept slowly dying until it finally closed its doors with Canek being the final UWA World Heavyweight title holder.

In 1992, Canek had some Japanese tours performing in the Wrestle Dream Factory and W*ING promotions. While competing at this last promotion he had a singles match against Mil Mascaras. Also in 1993 Canek started wrestling for EMLL and on 03/26/93 he gained the CMLL Tag Team titles teaming with [[Dr. Wagner Jr.]] and defeating the team of [[Vampiro]] & [[Pierroth Jr.]] in a best of 3 match series that was the finals of a tournament for the vacant titles. That title was vacated on November of 1994 as Canek stopped wrestling for "La Empresa" due to an elbow injury.

Canek wrestled for [[AAA]] in a limited capacity where he smartly was used for big angles and important matches where he still defended his UWA belt, which he temporary lost from August 15, 1999 to September 6 against [[Cadaver De Ultratumba]].

Even though always a very solid quality wrestler, he never was an off-the-charts performer like [[Dos Caras]] or [[El Solitario]]. However his incredible amounts of charisma, popularity, box office power, and the fact that his mask is one of the most beautiful and meaningful hoods ever seen, made him the Mexican idol and lucha libre legend he is now.

== Notes ==

Canek returned to CMLL on [[April 30]], [[2004]], immediately feuding with [[Dr. Wagner Jr.]]. When the Doc switched to the tecnico size, Canek mirrored him and switched to being a rudo. As part of the build up to an mask match between the two, Canek lost the [[UWA World Heavyweight Championship]] to Wagner.

Events have stalled from there. The mask match date never got set, and was seemingly forgotten for the time being. Wagner's tecnico turn (and [[Atlantis]]' rudo turn) lead the Doctor to other feuds. Canek was left without a big rivalry and his trademark championship. To fill the void, Canek feuded with other aging heavyweights, like [[Rayo de Jalisco Jr.]] and [[Head Hunter I]], and also won the [[IWRG Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship]].

When Canek returned to CMLL, there was talk that the promotion only took him back, and gave a part time spot to one of his sons ([[Canek Jr.]]), on the promise that Canek would lose his mask in their ring. That hasn't happened yet.

Canek's a ponderous wrestling at this point of his career, but the fans still see him as a living legend. His signature power moves still get over to those who've seen him and know him.
