== History of Championship ==
The UWA World Tag Team championships were part of [[LLI]]/El Toreo promotion until 1995, when the group folded. Since that time, various teams have made claims on the title or spontaneously declared themselves champions, occasionally inventing a loose story to explain the belts. As with most of the UWA belts, the championships themselves have no present significances and are purely drawing on past name value to make the champion seem more important.

At present time, there are at least three different teams who may claim to be UWA World Tag Team Champions:
* [[Villano IV]] & [[Villano V]], who were the last champions while LLI was still around
* [[Animal]] & [[Kensuke Sasaki]], who won a match for the vacant championship on [[May 11]], [[2008]], in a match declared as the authentic battle for the titles by a former official of the UWA
* Brahman Shu & Brahman Kei of Japan's El Dorado promotion. Those belts stem originally with [[NOSAWA]] & [[MASADA]], who claimed they won the belts on a tour of Mexico

There was also a fourth title line, involving [[Los Rayos Tapatíos]], but it has been dropped.

Animal & Kensuke Sasaki are the closest thing to 'offical'champions. Brahman Shu & Brahman Kei may be the most meaningful championship, since their championship is actually used on an ongoing basis in a promotion. All the different branches are still people claiming to be the champion of a promotion that has not existed in many years, so none of them are especially important.

On [[May 11]], [[2008]], at the annual May Dragonmania show, the previously scheduled [[Terrible]] & [[Damian 666]] versus [[Animal]] & [[Kensuke Sasaki]] was changed to a title match for the vacant UWA World Tag Team Titles. New belts, matching the design used for the [[UWA World Heavyweight Championship]] were presented to the winners and the match was made official by the UWA.

In the post-UWA era, during the long stretch where their Villano's championships were inactive, Los Rayo Tapatios briefly defended and lost a set of the tag team championship as the UWA World Tag Team Championships. These might have been the Distrio Federal Tag championships under a different name (getting around not being defending in DF).

The titles returned in 2019 labeled as "'''UWA Intercontinental Tag Team'''" Championship in Promociones Nueva Generacion based out of Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas. "World Couples THL Champion" it's written in the belt

=== Japan Branch ===
In [[2008]], Nosawa and Masada proclaimed themselves as UWA World Tag Team Champions, claiming they had defeated [[Rayo de Tapatio I]] & [[Rayo de Tapatio II]] in July [[2000]]. (They apparently kept the title win quiet for a good six to eight years.) It's possible these were the belts the Tapatios were defending, or that they purchased them from the [[Villanos]] or the belts were just grabbed out of a closet somewhere.

Nosawa & Masada quickly lost the championship to El Dorado's KAGETORA & Kota Ibushi. El Dorado's ancestral promotion, [[Toryumon]], used the [[UWA World Trios Championship]] among other UWA titles, and it appeared as though the tag team titles may serve a similar purpose of giving a newer group some additional legitimacy new championships wouldn't provide. The El Dorado promotion did not last long, but the championships have remained active. They've transferred thru the Michinoku Pro, Kaientai and DDT promotions.

There's no actual connection to the [[UWA]], which has been deceased for many years, but UWA means something in that niche. The Japan belts means as much as the Mexico belts - there's no governing body or promotion backing them, they're simply whatever the people who have them want them to be. However, since there's a trail of title events to explain the Mexico branch and there's not the same with the Japan branch, the Japan championships are decided to be a Disputed Branch.

Animal & Kensuke Sasaki are the closest thing to 'offical'champions. Brahman Shu & Brahman Kei may be the most meaningful championship, since their championship is actually used on an ongoing basis in a promotion. All the different branches are still people claiming to be the champion of a promotion that has not existed in many years, so none of them are especially important.

In [[2008]], Nosawa and Masada proclaimed themselves as UWA World Tag Team Champions, claiming they had defeated [[Rayo de Tapatio I]] & [[Rayo de Tapatio II]] in July [[2000]]. (They apparently kept the title win quiet for a good six to eight years.) It's possible these were the belts the Tapatios were defending, or that they purchased them from the [[Villanos]] or the belts were just grabbed out of a closet somewhere.

Nosawa & Masada quickly lost the championship to El Dorado's KAGETORA & Kota Ibushi. El Dorado's ancestral promotion, [[Toryumon]], used the [[UWA World Trios Championship]] among other UWA titles, and it appeared as though the tag team titles may serve a similar purpose of giving a newer group some additional legitimacy new championships wouldn't provide. The El Dorado promotion did not last long, but the championships have remained active. They've transferred thru the Michinoku Pro, Kaientai and DDT promotions.

There's no actual connection to the [[UWA]], which has been deceased for many years, but UWA means something in that niche. The Japan belts means as much as the Mexico belts - there's no governing body or promotion backing them, they're simply whatever the people who have them want them to be. However, since there's a trail of title events to explain the Mexico branch and there's not the same with the Japan branch, the Japan championships are decided to be a Disputed Branch.

Formerly a championship of UWA, once a belt of Japan joshi promotions, this is now mostly a indy title. [[Miss Janeth]] is the most recent champion. She's essentially retired and the belt appears to be the same.

== History of Championship ==

[[Vickie Williams]] is the initial champion, but likely was awarded the title with a fictional backstory. [[Box Y Lucha 1411]] mentions Williams defeating Fabolous Moolah "a month ago" (sometime in October) for the title, then immediately being signed to appear in Mexico. This is extremely unlikely knowing that Moolah never lost to anyone she couldn't immediately beat afterward, and she was in the midst of her near-28-year stranglehold on the NWA Women's Title at this point. Williams is usually listed as defeating Irma Gonzalez for the belt, which may instead be her first title defense (and the first real match for the title.)

Chessman in one of AAA's signature rudos. He's never been treated as a top guy, but is usually near or in the main event due to his abilities to make the tecnicos look good. Chessman is as good with comedy tecnico as brawling tecnicos as flying tecnicos. However, much to his own personal disappointment, he's never seen as quite good enough to be champion of the group.

Chessman's character was created by [[Antonio Pena]]. Chessman himself was confused at what the new character was supposed to be when it was first proposed to him, unsure if Pena meant him to be a cheese or a chess piece. Pena explained it was actual a takeoff of notorious US criminal Caryl Chessman, who had used a red light in his kidnappings. Chessman's been a long time ally (and occasional rival) of [[Charly Manson]], who has a similar origin for his character.

Chessman was a fubtol prospect prior to his lucha libre career. He has soccer in his blood - his father was on a championship winning team - but says he never really liked playing himself. Chessman says his soccer career ended when he accidentally injured a foreign player in a practice match.
