== Biography ==
Super Muñeco was a journeyman wrestler working as Sanguinario Jr. (no relation to the Sanguinario that died in 2002) and other names, who switched to Super Muñeco in the early 80s. When in the late 80s he was found by Ben Mora Jr., who at the time ran the Baja California area (Tijuana) and had just bought the "Lucha Libre" magazine from Valente Perez, he was given a big push right away. Just to put things into perspective, "Lucha Libre" was the magazine that 'created' characters like Mil Mascaras and Tinieblas, and it was pretty much like a Mexican Apter Mag, putting on the cover the "cool" guys they liked like Dos Caras, Canek, etc., so being featured on covers with Santo Jr. or Atlantis helped.

At first he was really resented and many old-schoolers would semi-shoot on him (they would work really stiff on him, potato him, etc. every night) because they hated to be selling for a clown, but eventually he proved himself as a good worker (back then he was sort of good) and good draw, so they all loved working with him.

His team with Super Raton (a little dude built like Mighty Mouse...sorta like a 5'3" Jim Duggan with the big chest) and Super Pinocho (Pinocchio). Pinocho was a poor worker but Raton used to be pretty good. They worked a fast comedy style, and soon became draws with the kids. For a short while, they were awesome draws, getting sellouts at Arena Mexico for a masks vs. masks match with the four NINJA TURTLES (they teamed with Coliseo 2000, who was Muñeco ?s protege), and drawing 17,500+ in Monterrey for a mask match against the THUNDERCATS (Leono, Tigro and Panthro).

One funny thing about the Ninja Turtle or Thundercats kind of gimmicks is that usually under the mask there would be an awesome underrated worker, like a Lasser or Skayde type.

Anyway, they got into AAA because they were almost tailor made for Peña's promotion as comedy workers who could do fun stuff, but their trio career in there got killed when Pinocho shoot unmasked Parka. Back in 1992 during the "TV boom" there was like 14 or 15 different magazines, and they would try anything to get some leverage over the others. For whatever reason, AAA banned "Titanes del Ring" photographers from taking pictures, but they eventually came back. Pinocho was best buddies with a photographer of "Titanes del Ring", who suggested him to unmask Parka so he could take a good picture, and the magazine next week would have a "FRAUD! Parka is Principe Island!" (his former gimmick) cover, which also served as revenge.

Pinocho got such heat for that, that he was blacklisted from AAA and many wrestlers vowed to shoot on him if they were with him in the ring. He even retired for a while so people would "forget".

Anyhow, that started the Muñeco singles push. His work was getting worse even though he could do athletic stuff, but his gimmick worked. He kind of failed in pushes as a major star, and totally bombed as a heel, but stayed a few good years in AAA and eventually left to become and independent contractor which is what he is now. His days of being a major draw are long gone, too, but he's still a fairly popular indy star.

Muñeco is also the wrestler with more RECORDED mask & hair match wins than anyone else. Apparently Estrella Blanca (some 60s and 70s indy star) is the one with more mask wins, with the legend claiming 200+, but we have a record of 20 or so from him.

He's won mask matches over legends such as Ninja Turtles, Thundercats, Mazinger Z (Majinga Z), Hombre Lobo (The Wolfman), Batman, Destroyer (wait until Yohe reads this one [Smile] ), The Police, Kamikaze Ninja (Yukihide Ueno, who was Battle Ranger in FMW and Policeman in Super Delfin's promotion), Ultra Tiger (a Tiger Mask clone, also was Ueno), Nazi Soldier and the Mummies from Peru I and II. Actually he's won a few semi-major hairs like Espanto Jr., Popitekus, Ray Richard and Medico Asesino Jr.

Our count says 82 masks and 21 hairs, all documented and verified.

== Biography ==
Super Muñeco was a journeyman wrestler working as Sanguinario Jr. (no relation to the Sanguinario that died in 2002) and other names, who switched to Super Muñeco in the early 80s. When in the late 80s he was found by Ben Mora Jr., who at the time ran the Baja California area (Tijuana) and had just bought the "Lucha Libre" magazine from Valente Perez, he was given a big push right away. Just to put things into perspective, "Lucha Libre" was the magazine that 'created' characters like Mil Mascaras and Tinieblas, and it was pretty much like a Mexican Apter Mag, putting on the cover the "cool" guys they liked like Dos Caras, Canek, etc., so being featured on covers with Santo Jr. or Atlantis helped.

At first he was really resented and many old-schoolers would semi-shoot on him (they would work really stiff on him, potato him, etc. every night) because they hated to be selling for a clown, but eventually he proved himself as a good worker (back then he was sort of good) and good draw, so they all loved working with him.

His team with Super Raton (a little dude built like Mighty Mouse...sorta like a 5'3" Jim Duggan with the big chest) and Super Pinocho (Pinocchio). Pinocho was a poor worker but Raton used to be pretty good. They worked a fast comedy style, and soon became draws with the kids. For a short while, they were awesome draws, getting sellouts at Arena Mexico for a masks vs. masks match with the four NINJA TURTLES (they teamed with Coliseo 2000, who was Muñeco ?s protege), and drawing 17,500+ in Monterrey for a mask match against the THUNDERCATS (Leono, Tigro and Panthro).

One funny thing about the Ninja Turtle or Thundercats kind of gimmicks is that usually under the mask there would be an awesome underrated worker, like a Lasser or Skayde type.

Anyway, they got into AAA because they were almost tailor made for Peña's promotion as comedy workers who could do fun stuff, but their trio career in there got killed when Pinocho shoot unmasked Parka. Back in 1992 during the "TV boom" there was like 14 or 15 different magazines, and they would try anything to get some leverage over the others. For whatever reason, AAA banned "Titanes del Ring" photographers from taking pictures, but they eventually came back. Pinocho was best buddies with a photographer of "Titanes del Ring", who suggested him to unmask Parka so he could take a good picture, and the magazine next week would have a "FRAUD! Parka is Principe Island!" (his former gimmick) cover, which also served as revenge.

Pinocho got such heat for that, that he was blacklisted from AAA and many wrestlers vowed to shoot on him if they were with him in the ring. He even retired for a while so people would "forget".

Anyhow, that started the Muñeco singles push. His work was getting worse even though he could do athletic stuff, but his gimmick worked. He kind of failed in pushes as a major star, and totally bombed as a heel, but stayed a few good years in AAA and eventually left to become and independent contractor which is what he is now. His days of being a major draw are long gone, too, but he's still a fairly popular indy star.

Muñeco is also the wrestler with more RECORDED mask & hair match wins than anyone else. Apparently Estrella Blanca (some 60s and 70s indy star) is the one with more mask wins, with the legend claiming 200+, but we have a record of 20 or so from him.

He's won mask matches over legends such as Ninja Turtles, Thundercats, Mazinger Z (Majinga Z), Hombre Lobo (The Wolfman), Batman, Destroyer (wait until Yohe reads this one [Smile] ), The Police, Kamikaze Ninja (Yukihide Ueno, who was Battle Ranger in FMW and Policeman in Super Delfin's promotion), Ultra Tiger (a Tiger Mask clone, also was Ueno), Nazi Soldier and the Mummies from Peru I and II. Actually he's won a few semi-major hairs like Espanto Jr., Popitekus, Ray Richard and Medico Asesino Jr.

Our count says 82 masks and 21 hairs, all documented and verified.

== Biography ==
Super Muñeco was a journeyman wrestler working as Sanguinario Jr. (no relation to the Sanguinario that died in 2002) and other names, who switched to Super Muñeco in the early 80s. When in the late 80s he was found by Ben Mora Jr., who at the time ran the Baja California area (Tijuana) and had just bought the "Lucha Libre" magazine from Valente Perez, he was given a big push right away. Just to put things into perspective, "Lucha Libre" was the magazine that 'created' characters like Mil Mascaras and Tinieblas, and it was pretty much like a Mexican Apter Mag, putting on the cover the "cool" guys they liked like Dos Caras, Canek, etc., so being featured on covers with Santo Jr. or Atlantis helped.

At first he was really resented and many old-schoolers would semi-shoot on him (they would work really stiff on him, potato him, etc. every night) because they hated to be selling for a clown, but eventually he proved himself as a good worker (back then he was sort of good) and good draw, so they all loved working with him.

His team with Super Raton (a little dude built like Mighty Mouse...sorta like a 5'3" Jim Duggan with the big chest) and Super Pinocho (Pinocchio). Pinocho was a poor worker but Raton used to be pretty good. They worked a fast comedy style, and soon became draws with the kids. For a short while, they were awesome draws, getting sellouts at Arena Mexico for a masks vs. masks match with the four NINJA TURTLES (they teamed with Coliseo 2000, who was Muñeco ?s protege), and drawing 17,500+ in Monterrey for a mask match against the THUNDERCATS (Leono, Tigro and Panthro).

One funny thing about the Ninja Turtle or Thundercats kind of gimmicks is that usually under the mask there would be an awesome underrated worker, like a Lasser or Skayde type.

Anyway, they got into AAA because they were almost tailor made for Peña's promotion as comedy workers who could do fun stuff, but their trio career in there got killed when Pinocho shoot unmasked Parka. Back in 1992 during the "TV boom" there was like 14 or 15 different magazines, and they would try anything to get some leverage over the others. For whatever reason, AAA banned "Titanes del Ring" photographers from taking pictures, but they eventually came back. Pinocho was best buddies with a photographer of "Titanes del Ring", who suggested him to unmask Parka so he could take a good picture, and the magazine next week would have a "FRAUD! Parka is Principe Island!" (his former gimmick) cover, which also served as revenge.

Pinocho got such heat for that, that he was blacklisted from AAA and many wrestlers vowed to shoot on him if they were with him in the ring. He even retired for a while so people would "forget".

Anyhow, that started the Muñeco singles push. His work was getting worse even though he could do athletic stuff, but his gimmick worked. He kind of failed in pushes as a major star, and totally bombed as a heel, but stayed a few good years in AAA and eventually left to become and independent contractor which is what he is now. His days of being a major draw are long gone, too, but he's still a fairly popular indy star.

Muñeco is also the wrestler with more RECORDED mask & hair match wins than anyone else. Apparently Estrella Blanca (some 60s and 70s indy star) is the one with more mask wins, with the legend claiming 200+, but we have a record of 20 or so from him.

He's won mask matches over legends such as Ninja Turtles, Thundercats, Mazinger Z (Majinga Z), Hombre Lobo (The Wolfman), Batman, Destroyer (wait until Yohe reads this one [Smile] ), The Police, Kamikaze Ninja (Yukihide Ueno, who was Battle Ranger in FMW and Policeman in Super Delfin's promotion), Ultra Tiger (a Tiger Mask clone, also was Ueno), Nazi Soldier and the Mummies from Peru I and II. Actually he's won a few semi-major hairs like Espanto Jr., Popitekus, Ray Richard and Medico Asesino Jr.

Our count says 82 masks and 21 hairs, all documented and verified.

== Notes ==
In [[CMLL]], Halloween's been an upper midcarder rudo, relying on brawling, famous WWE moves, and his partner [[Damian 666]] in the ring. Halloween's also a member of [[Perros del Mal]], joining early on.

Currently, Halloween's mostly out of action. In his [[December 2]], [[2005]] hair match with [[Universo]], Halloween took a tombstome for the loss. That's the storyline explanation for his absence, but it appeared as if Halloween also got knee surgery at the same time. Halloween made one more appearance in CMLL following his injury, bandaged and in a wheel cheer, selling his injuries.

Halloween talked about retirement in a late December 2005 interview with [[Box Y Lucha]], but has apparently worked towards recovery. He's wrestled at least once in Tijuana, and he'll probably be back in Mexico City before the summer is over. (June 2006)

Kicked out of Perros del Mal stable by Hijo del Perro Aguayo himself on August 10, 2007 after Lizmark Jr's defection.

Joined AAA promotion, teaming up with Xtreme Tiger and Nicho el Millonario in a new "Familia de Tijuana" Stable.

== Biography ==

[[Dr. Wagner Jr.]] is the top tecnico not wearing a silver mask in [[CMLL]]. He's a young legend to the fans, a wrestler with international experience (and success!) and capable of a great match when he wants one. Dr. Wagner is one of the most popular wrestlers in Mexico, and an iconic figure.

Wagner turned tecnico following the death of [[Dr. Wagner|his father.]] The change was fan inspired; Wagner was in a four way mask match on the first [[Arena Mexico]] show after his father's passing, and the fans did not want him to lose his mask that night under any circumstances. Wagner did not lose his mask, and the crowd clung to him after that moment. Wagner and the promotion tried to go back to the status quo after, but the fans cheered him enough to make a change.

Dr. Wagner becoming a tecnico had ripple affects across the promotion. Since he was feuding with [[Canek]], Canek had to turn rudo to continue it. Later, in [[2005]], the fans loudly picked Wagner over [[Atlantis]] when they were setting up a mask versus mask match, to the point where Atlantis was tainted as a tecnico (and had to be turned rudo) and Wagner had become so popular, the match couldn't be done at a profit to all sides.

Even though the mask match never took place, Atlantis and Wagner continue to be rivals, with the idea all sides might one day do the match in a different arena where the money works out better. (The feud with Canek has slipped to the wayside.)

More pressing for Dr. Wagner at the moment is a feud with another recently turned tecnico, [[LA Park]]. As with Atlantis, the crowd turned on LA Park with no prompting, and he responded in kind. Wagner stuck up for the people of "his house", and he and Park have had violent brawls in the weeks since. A Park/Wagner mask match would seem to have the same financial issues as the Atlantis one, but that's the way they seem to be heading.

Wagner often teams with [[Mistico]], as a big brother/protector to the smaller wrestler. He'll also team with his newly unmasked brother, [[Silver King]], who has been wrestling in some locales as Dr. Wagner Jr. II or el Hermano de Dr. Wagner Jr. Wagner has shown himself capable of wrestling Japanese junior and lucha technical styles, but his current feuds and positioning has resulted in him primary working as a brawler with hot comeback moves.

Dr. Wagner Jr. still potentially has many years left in his career. However, he's often said to have saved well from his career and could retire early. It's believed he was going to lose his mask to Atlantis when that match was originally scheduled, which could have been the one last big payoff of his career. Instead, it seems like he's going to hang around for a while longer.

== Notes ==
In [[CMLL]], Halloween's been an upper midcarder rudo, relying on brawling, famous WWE moves, and his partner [[Damian 666]] in the ring. Halloween's also a member of [[Perros del Mal]], joining early on.

Currently, Halloween's mostly out of action. In his [[December 2]], [[2005]] hair match with [[Universo]], Halloween took a tombstome for the loss. That's the storyline explanation for his absence, but it appeared as if Halloween also got knee surgery at the same time. Halloween made one more appearance in CMLL following his injury, bandaged and in a wheel cheer, selling his injuries.

Halloween talked about retirement in a late December 2005 interview with [[Box Y Lucha]], but has apparently worked towards recovery. He's wrestled at least once in Tijuana, and he'll probably be back in Mexico City before the summer is over. (June 2006)

Kicked out of Perros del Mal stable by Hijo del Perro Aguayo himself on August 10, 2007 after Lizmark Jr's defection.

== Biography ==


Part of a wrestling family, but portrayed as an orphan who learned the sport from mentor [[Fray Tormenta]], Mistico debuted in CMLL in 2004. Mistico rose to the top of the promotion at a record pace, and was arguably the top star in the promotion a year later.

Mistico is one of the biggest stars of the moment in lucha libre, if not the biggest. His name being part of a wrestling card can draw thousands of extra fans, regardless of the matchup. He's crossed over to Mexican popular culture and been featured on television shows and music videos.

Mistico is currently a CMLL wrestler, but has been offered a deal by [[WWE]]. At this time, it appears he's staying in CMLL, but the option to jump the United States promotion will likely always been available to him. CMLL claims to have Mistico under a solid contract, and owns the rights to name and image of Mistico.

Mistico is actually a man from a family of wrestlers, and is the nephew of CMLL official [[Tony Salazar]]. He'd been wrestling under different names since at least the beginning of the decades. Directly prior to being Mistico, he was Astro Boy (taking the name from a deceased brother), an spectacular undercard wrestler who also wrestled in Japan from time to time.

In 2003, CMLL's fans told the promotion that they wanted to see more new stars, and CMLL tried to fulfill the request with [[Sagrado]], a devoutly religious young high flying babyface who was promoted as a trainee of famous wrestling priest [[Fray Tormenta]]. Sagrado flopped out of the gate, with the blame being shifted towards Sagrado's ringwork (he was nervous and he wasn't ready for that spot), CMLL decided to recycle the entire concept with a different wrestler.

A year later, Mistico debuted, which much the same back story, while Sagrado was downplayed to avoid focus on the similarities. Mistico might have previously been passed over for being a smaller wrestler, even by Mexico standards, but his spectacular moves (and his ability not to screw them up) made him the exactly exciting new young guy fans wanted.

*Mortal - Any 360 or 180 flip (a moonsault, a somersault bodyblock, etc.)
*Nudo - [Knot] Basically, any submission in which the attacker ties his opponent's legs and/or arms in a knot.

*[[La Valagueza|Valaguesa]] - Attacker sets opponent on top rope, bending their body forward. He then puts his left shoulder against the back of the opponent's neck, hooks both legs and lifts him off in that position, so he ends up vertically folded on his shoulder. Finally he jumps and kneels down, bending the opponent with a lot of pressure on his neck. The jump is often done after spinning a few times. Often referred to in English as the Muscle Buster or Kinniku Buster (in reference to the "Ultimate M.U.S.C.L.E." character's finisher) [thanks to Canz for explanation]

*Bull Terrier Match - Chain match that be either a regular match (with pinfalls and submissions) or a match in which you have to touch the four corners to get the win.
*Cuadrangular - Four way match.
*Cuadrangular de la muerte - Four way match in which they are all in the ring at the same time, and the two first wrestlers to be pinned have to face each other in a regular "lucha de apuestas".
*Lucha de apuestas - Either a hair vs. hair, hair vs. mask or mask vs. mask match. Basically, a match where both guys bet something. Lucha en Jaula - Cage match.
*Lucha en Super Libre - No DQ match. Often called "lucha en super libre sin r???feri" meaning the ref is only there to count to three or to make sure the opponent submits. In both AAA and EMLL some Super Libre matches have finished in a DQ, though.
*Mano a mano - A singles match.
*Relevos atómicos - [Atomic tag match] Eight-man tag.
*Relevos australianos - [Australian tag match] Six-man tag.

*Triangular - Three way match.
*Triangular de la muerte - Three way match where all wrestlers bet their hair or mask. Usually, the three guys are in the ring at the same time and they have an elimination match. The winner of this little match saves his hair or mask, and the two losers battling in a regular "lucha de apuestas".

== Biography ==


Part of a wrestling family, but portrayed as an orphan who learned the sport from mentor [[Fray Tormenta]], Mistico debuted in CMLL in 2004. Mistico rose to the top of the promotion at a record pace, and was arguably the top star in the promotion a year later.

Mistico is one of the biggest stars of the moment in lucha libre, if not the biggest. His name being part of a wrestling card can draw thousands of extra fans, regardless of the matchup. He's crossed over to Mexican popular culture and been featured on television shows and music videos.

Mistico is currently a CMLL wrestler, but has been offered a deal by [[WWE]]. At this time, it appears he's staying in CMLL, but the option to jump the United States promotion will likely always been available to him. CMLL claims to have Mistico under a solid contract, and owns the rights to name and image of Mistico.

Mistico is actually a man from a family of wrestlers, and is the nephew of CMLL official [[Tony Salazar]]. He'd been wrestling under different names since at least the beginning of the decades. Directly prior to being Mistico, he was Astro Boy (taking the name from a deceased brother), an spectacular undercard wrestler who also wrestled in Japan from time to time.

In 2003, CMLL's fans told the promotion that they wanted to see more new stars, and CMLL tried to fulfill the request with [[Sagrado]], a devoutly religious young high flying babyface who was promoted as a trainee of famous wrestling priest [[Fray Tormenta]]. Sagrado flopped out of the gate, with the blame being shifted towards Sagrado's ringwork (he was nervous and he wasn't ready for that spot), CMLL decided to recycle the entire concept with a different wrestler.

A year later, Mistico debuted, which much the same back story, while Sagrado was downplayed to avoid focus on the similarities. Mistico might have previously been passed over for being a smaller wrestler, even by Mexico standards, but his spectacular moves (and his ability not to screw them up) made him the exactly exciting new young guy fans wanted.

Sagrado is a [[CMLL]] tecnico midcarder. When he started with this gimmick in 2003, he wasn't very good, but he's developed into at least a generic tecnico. Unfortunately for him, his early problems diminished his initial push, and he was just another guy in limbo until he was assembled as part of a random trio with [[Maximo]] and [[Texano Jr.]] and won the [[Mexican National Trios Championship]].

As Genetico, he participated in the first [[Guapos U]] class. He wasn't one of the top wrestlers in the group, but showed enough that he was given the gimmick of Sagrado: a religious wrestler with the blessing of [[Fray Tormenta]]. That should sound familiar; when Sagrado didn't get over due to his work, they recycled the same concept a year later, and gave it to [[Mistico]]. The similarities between the two characters have been downplayed for the most part.

== Overview of Candidacy For The Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame ==

1. Was he ever regarded as the best draw in the
world? Was he ever regarded as the best draw in his
country or his promotion?

No and no. He had periods where he was considered one of the top draws in
his promotion (more to this later), but in that period there was people like
[[Canek]], [[Konnan]], [[Perro Aguayo|Aguayo]], [[Cien Caras]], who were clearly ahead of him in terms of drawing.

2. Was he an international draw, national draw
and/or regional draw?

He is a national draw, and a regional draw. In fact, perhaps one of his
biggest strengths was his ability to draw in the most remote of places.
During years, his gimmick and nickname was that he was "the idol of the
kids", and this was actually true as his popularity was amazing. As I said,
he had an ability to easily fill out small to medium sized arenas (2,000 to
5,000, more or less) that could not afford bringing the top tier guys that
would rather work somewhere else where there was more money.

3. How many years did he have as a top draw?

I'd say he was a top draw from 1988 to 1991. In 1992 AAA entered the game,
and he didn't jump ship. Other than that, he did have good drawing periods
building up to his mask vs. mask matches with [[Mano Negra]] (Oct 93) and
[[Villano III]] (selling out Arena Mexico - in the last five years the only
other times it has been sold out have been for [[Cien Caras]] vs. [[Perro Aguayo|Aguayo]], [[Perro Aguayo|Aguayo]] retirement vs. [[Universo 2000|Universo]], [[El Hijo del Santo|Santo]]/[[Negro Casas|Casas]] vs. [[Scorpio Jr.|Scorpio]]/[[Bestia Salvaje]], [[Rayo de Jalisco Jr.|Rayo de Jalisco]] vs. [[Steel]], all of them hair or mask matches). After AAA, and not
counting those times, he has not really been a draw, but there is periods
where nobody in the promotion really has been.

Before that "drawing prime", he was many times on top of the cards and
headlined some of them which were sellouts. He is a guy that during
virtually all of his career, first based on work and charisma, and now on
reputation, has been on top of the cards and he's always been counted on to
headline "anniversary cards". His anniversary card record has all of the
following cards selling out except for 1992 (11,500, weak card w/ a poor,
thrown out, [[Dandy]] vs. [[Satanico]] hair vs. hair match in the semi that nobody
wanted to see - this match is not to be confused with their previous classic
bouts) and 1999 (15,000) but everybody knew neither Villano or Atlantis was
going to lose.

When he was not headlining, he could be found several times in the semi-main
event of those cards (90, 97, 99). Other sellout drawing matches were his
mask winning matches vs. [[Kung Fu]], and [[Hombre Bala]].

One good conclusion would be saying that when put on big matches expected to
draw, he delivered, but in the Mexico City arenas, except for a relative
short period, he was not a week-in-week-out huge draw like [[Perro Aguayo|Aguayo]], [[Konnan]],
[[Vampiro]], [[El Hijo del Santo|Santo Jr.]], Misioneros, etc. who people paid to see no matter who
they faced. But to make up for it, he had the regional arena draw level.

4. Was he ever regarded as the best worker in the
world? Was he ever regarded as the best worker in
his country or in his promotion?

No to both. The first one is out of the question. Atlantis' best year
work wise was 1989, and even then there was several guys ahead of him: [[El Dandy]], [[Pirata Morgan]], [[Emilio Charles Jr.]], [[Javier Cruz]], [[Fuerza Guerrera]],
Satanico and that's only counting EMLL natives. If we add UWA and the indy
guys, we could come up with a few extra names.

The only period where I can really imagine a very strong argument for
Atlantis being the best worker in his promotion is 84 to 86. [[Emilio Charles Jr.|Charles]] was not
as good and [[Dandy]] had not grown as much (by 87 I'd put both over Atlantis).
I'd put [[Satanico]] above him and maybe [[Lizmark]], though during those years
Atlantis was more inspired than [[Lizmark]] and I know some would put Atlantis
over [[Satanico]] as well. [[Fuerza Guerrera|Fuerza]] was not EMLL, but indy who worked for both UWA
and EMLL, so I am not counting him, or I'd put him above Atlantis too. Ditto
[[Negro Casas|Casas]] and [[El Hijo del Santo|Santo]] who also worked some Arena Mexico cards.

5. Was he ever the best worker in his class (sex or
weight)? Was he ever one of the top workers in his
class?

He's been a middleweight during the first half of his career and and a
borderline Light Heavyweight during the latter half. When he was very young,
he was a welterweight, but soon became a middleweight.

That being said, except for perhaps the period mentioned above, there's
always been better workers in his class like [[Emilio Charles Jr.]], [[El Dandy]]
when he became a middleweight (late 86/early 87), [[Negro Casas]] (in reality he
was a welterweight who also held several welterweight titles, but he
regularly faced the middleweight guys). That is only counting Mexico.

By 1991, while he was still very good, his work was already passed by
several other guys in the Middleweight ranks. When he was "officially" a
Light Heavyweight (early 93), there also was several better guys such as
[[L.A. Park|Parka]], [[Jerry Estrada]] or [[Lizmark]] who were having great matches in AAA.

6. How many years did he have as a top worker?

His debut date is universally listed as 1983 (though I heard once, but never
confirmed, that he had been under other name and mask at least two years
earlier, 1981). In 1983, he already was very good. His work was clearly down
by 1996, though he had that last hurrah vs. [[Villano III]]. Nowadays he can
still have good matches, but only with top opposition.

7. Was he a good worker before his prime? Was he a
good worker after his prime?

As said before, his prime being 1989 would tell us the answer to both
questions is yes. Nowadays he is not bad by any means, but he is really
predictable and his matches are bland and by-the-numbers unless motivated by
his opponent or by the situation (i.e. title match or a big tournament). A
huge feud would do wonders for him. But reputation takes you a long way and
he still has got the rep, and it helps that he is very easy to work with.

8. Did he have a large body of excellent matches?
Did he have a excellent matches against a variety of opponents?

Yes. Excellent singles matches vs. [[Blue Panther]] (best lucha match of the 90s
that nobody ever seems to talk about), [[Villano III]], [[Emilio Charles Jr.]],
[[Jerry Estrada]], [[El Dandy]], [[Satanico]], just to name a few. Also, a wide variety
of trios matches were his performance was an important part in making the
match excellent.

9. Did he ever anchor his promotion(s)?

He was, with [[Lizmark]] and [[Rayo de Jalisco Jr.|Rayo Jr.]], the main tecnico star of the promotion during the last years in the 80s through 1990. By 1991 we had [[Octagon]]
getting over from lowcard attraction to main event superstar fast, [[Perro Aguayo|Aguayo]]
wrestling more at Arena Mexico as a tecnico, [[Konnan]], [[Anibal|Anibal's]] return to lose
his mask. By 1992, we also had [[Vampiro]] and [[Love Machine|Love Machine's]] push. In all
fairness, Atlantis was still there, sometimes main eventing, but he was far
from an anchor. He "took back" his spot when by May, everybody and their
mothers had left to AAA. When AAA started the main tecnicos for La Empresa
were Atlantis, [[Rayo de Jalisco Jr.|Rayo]], [[Lizmark]] and [[Vampiro]]. And not too much after, Lizmark and [[Rayo de Jalisco Jr.|Rayo]] left.

10. Was he effective when pushed at the top of
cards?

Yes. He played his roles well (more later), made a good champion when given
a belt AND booked to look like a fighting champion (you can not blame him for
CMLL not caring about some of their titles), and when given the chance he
rarely let anybody down by not being good or charismatic enough.

His hardest career test perhaps was starting it off with a nice push in the
market with the toughest fans, but he didn't let anybody down even then.

11. Was he valuable to his promotion before his
prime? Was he still valuable to his promotion after
his prime?

Yes and yes. Before his prime he was an amazing young worker who could be
used on top if needed and was a natural successor for Lizmark. He was given
the chance to headline several big shows, and through work and charisma he
was seen as a big star. Years later, Mogur, who was a similar prospect
(though not as good in the ring) was given a similar push and he failed. And
also [[Angel Azteca]] was given a push as an Atlantis/[[Lizmark]] kind of guy, and
got over well enough, but was never seen on the level.

After his prime, he had several big and huge matches. Nowadays he's still
useful to the company as a "young legend" that can still go. He is still
used in main events, both trios and singles, and currently is 1/3 of the
CMLL Trios champions with [[Mr. Niebla]] and [[Black Warrior]].

12. Did he have an impact on a number of strong
promotional runs?

During the 80s, UWA was the number one promotion, and EMLL had good business
but not strong promotional runs.

In one of those funny things, I think by 1989 guys like Atlantis, Satanico,
Dandy, Pirata Morgan with their work, and others like Cien Caras and Rayo de
Jalisco Jr. with their mask match a year later, along with the decline of
novelty value in the UWA cards after [[Francisco Flores|Francisco Flores']] death, were key
pieces in making la Empresa the #1 promotion in Mexico again. But by 1991-92
with the TV boom caused by TV personalities like [[Konnan]], [[Octagon]], [[Vampiro]],
Brazos, etc., and legends like [[Perro Aguayo|Aguayo]], caused the guys that had been pulling
the wagon during the last few years (except for [[Cien Caras]]) to be pushed
back. Not to say it was a bad thing to do business wise, but I always think
Peña never really knew how to use either Atlantis or [[Satanico]].

13. Was he involved in a number of memorable
rivalries, feuds or storylines?

Yes. His rivalries with [[Mano Negra]] and [[Villano III]], even if it was just
because of the value of the fallen mask, would be talked about in 30 years.
Especially the [[Villano III]]. But they made them actually very interesting
feuds, with one of them ending in one of the few memorable matches of the
last five years, and the other one actually had a disappointing mask vs.
mask match but was a very good feud overall.

Him feuding with [[Kung Fu]] is considered memorable because of [[Kung Fu|Kung Fu's]]
nostalgia value to Toreo fans, but I hated it. I'm putting the blame 100%
here on [[Kung Fu]] as Atlantis did what he could. No way their matches could be
memorable.

The [[Angel Azteca|Azteca]]/Atlantis vs. [[Dandy]]/[[Satanico]] rivalry was not long lived because of Dandy turning, but it was a hardcore lucha libre fan dream and matches were
memorable. The Atlantis vs. [[Emilio Charles Jr.|Charles]] feud was great, too, but not memorable
even though some of their matches were.

14. Was he effective working on the mic, working
storylines or working angles?

Mic work is almost irrelevant in Mexico (but he is not good at it - during
years he would endlessy stammer when in front of the mic, even though he
didn't have a stammer). Working storylines, I think he always was very
effective. Realistically, nobody with some vision of the business thought
he'd ever lose against [[Kung Fu]] or [[Mano Negra]] as both were past their prime
as workers (not that [[Kung Fu]] was ever great) and they were played out acts
with no drawing power left outside of a big mask match. But he played the
sympathetic babyface so well, that he made you doubt. Now, [[Villano III]] is
another subject. We (as in the English language lucha community) had been
hearing for months rumors about [[Villano III|Villano]] wanting to drop the mask, but the
feud was built so well that we were in the edge until the day of the match.
I can honestly say that even though I had Atlantis as the winner I was not
too confident of my choice because it was close to a 50/50 chance pick.

15. Did he play his role(s) effectively during his
career?

Yes. He was a good "hungry young tecnico who can hang around with the vets".
He played this role successfully during his early years by outworking
veterans with a good worker rep, and not getting smoked when he was put in
the same team than a [[Lizmark]] or a [[Mascara Año 2000]] level tecnico (don't
laugh, this guy used to be pure awesomeness).

As a champion, I guess he's a bit like Kobashi or Toyota, who makes a better
challenger than champion, but he had credibility during his most important
title reign (his third NWA Middleweight title) as he made a good fighting
champion that defeated top challengers like [[Fiera]], [[Blue Panther|Panther]], [[Emilio Charles Jr.|Charles]], [[Javier Cruz|Cruz]], [[Dandy]] or then up-and-coming young rudo [[Bestia Salvaje]].

His other major role, which has been played on-and-off since 1988, was of
the "top star who is the partner of hot young tecnico prospects". By teaming
with him, he helped get [[Angel Azteca]] enough credibility to look like a
threat to top workers like [[Dandy]] and [[Satanico]]. Of course this also has got
to be credited to [[Dandy]] and [[Satanico]] for making [[Angel Azteca|Azteca]] look strong, and to
[[Angel Azteca|Azteca]] for being good to keep up, but Atlantis played his role well. He's
also had a somewhat similar role with [[Mr. Niebla]], and [[Octagon]] was put in
matches with him, [[El Hijo del Santo|Santo]] and others when [[Octagon]] was started to get
recognition as the "new hot prospect that is on the level of the stablished
stars". Also to his credit, Atlantis many times put his young partners over
in pre or post match interviews.

16. What titles and tournaments did he win? What was
the importance of the reigns?

National Middleweight Title: His first title. Can't say much on it, but he
had several very good matches.

NWA World Middleweight Title x 3. First two reigns was hot potato title
exchanges with [[Emilio Charles Jr.]], so little meaning, but the wrestling was
very good. He eventually took back the title in 1990 from [[Dandy]] in his last
reign, which is the one I already talked about.

National Tag Team Titles w/ [[Angel Azteca]]: This did more for [[Angel Azteca|Azteca]] than for
Atlantis. Very good tag matches vs. [[Dandy]] and [[Satanico]].

National Trios Titles w/ [[Octagon]] and [[Mascara Sagrada]]: Again, Atlantis & hot
prospects win titles to give credibility to the "new" guys.

CMLL World Light Heavyweight Title: First reign was more than a year and a
half long, but was not much. No strong title defenses that I can recall.
Second reign was a very good use of the title, as it was an extra to the
[[Villano III]] vs. Atlantis feud. [[Villano III]] took it back, but strong title
defenses all over (DF, Puebla, Cuernavaca) including V3 winning the title in
a show with a very good 5,500 crowd in Tampico.

CMLL World Tag Team Titles x2 w/ [[Rayo de Jalisco Jr.]], w/ [[Lizmark]]: Few title
defenses in each reign.

CMLL World Trios Titles x2 w/ [[Mr. Niebla]] & [[Lizmark]], w/ [[Mr. Niebla]] & [[Black Warrior]]: Ditto for the first reign. Second one is still going, but has not
amounted to much so far.

As for tournaments I can only recall the copa Victoria. Tournaments don't
mean much in Mexico unless it's the Leyenda de Plata. [[Rayo de Jalisco Jr.]]
loves to win lot of the small tournaments, so maybe Atlantis was in his team
for some.

17. Did he win many honors and awards?

WON Match Of The Year 2000 vs. [[Villano III]].

Back in the early 90s, the English speaking lucha community was the
subscriber list of Lucha Libre Weekly (Steve Sims' newsletter) and Viva la
Lucha (Kurt Brown's fanzine). The latter gave year end awards/polls from
89-94, while the other one usually had Steve's opinions only (IIRC). The
Mexican magazine awards are way more markish and political than the PWI
awards of the era, and they are hard to track down anyway, so I'm not
counting them.

VLL Babyface of the year: 1989, 90 and 93.
VLL Wrestler of the year: 1989
VLL Tope/Move of the year: 1990 (for his Quebrada)

18. Did he get mainstream exposure due to his
wrestling fame? Did he get a heavily featured by the
wrestling media?

No and no.

19. Was he a top tag team wrestler?

Not really, but tag team wrestling has not been really big in Mexico in the
last 16-17 years. Now we see a lot of it with the team of [[Ultimo Guerrero|Guerrero]] and
[[Rey Bucanero|Bucanero]], though, which is good, and El Toreo's golden years featured mostly
tag team matches on top, but Atlantis was a Coliseo/Mexico guy.

20. Was he innovative?

The Atlantida backbreaker seems to be his creation. Up to 1991, while not
innovative, his flying was state-of-the-art. In 1991 the new generation of
[[Volador]], [[Oro]], [[Misterioso]], etc. passed him in that aspect. And around that
time, he was smart enough to start dropping some of his crazy moves while
still young and healthy.

21. Was he influential?

He's not a [[Lizmark]]-like influential figure, though because of him being
popular, I guess many kids wanted to be like him. But I don't think that
makes you HOF worthy unless you are Santo and those kids were half a
country. :)

22. Did he make the people and workers around him
better?

Nowadays he just goes through the motions, but in the past he could look
good himself with a limited opponent, and he could make that opponent look
strong by selling and bumping well. During years, [[Pierroth Jr.]] and Atlantis
were the favorite rudo and tecnico (respectively) for the touring foreigners
because how easy was to work with them.

23. Did he do what was best for the promotion? Did
he show a commitment to wrestling?

He's considered the ultimate pro by his peers and the promoters, and he's
got dedication. He's a guy that rarely, if ever, no-shows without telling
the promoter in advance, and he's one of those guys that arrives to the
arena early. I have never heard any complaints about Atlantis' attitude.

Nowadays, he rarely loses cleanly, but he puts people over when needed and when he has got big mask vs. mask programs he puts his opponent over really strong. Of course he will end up taking the mask, but he does a good job of making it work. In fact, it's not too uncommon to see fans that are not all that knowledgeable about the worked side of the business, cite how Atlantis took the masks of [[Villano III|Villano]] and [[Mano Negra]] "with fluke wins" and "being an inferior wrestler" (in [[Villano III|Villano's]] case one can understand, but no way with [[Mano Negra]]).

24. Is there any reason to believe that he was
better or worse than he appeared?

He's always been really protected by [[Paco Alonso]], probably due to loyalty. During his prime years, as good as he was, he was always facing the top rudo workers in the promotion so he looked even better. But to be fair, those rudos also looked better and stronger when facing Atlantis too, so it was more of a mutual help deal.

== Notes ==

After being a career tecnico, Atlantis was changed to a rudo in [[2005]]. It did not appear to be his idea or even the promotion's idea, but the fans forcing a change. [[CMLL]] had been building up Atlantis, including weekly ''Seccion Azul'' features trumpeting his work with kids or focusing an award being given to Atlantis, to push him as the ultimate good guy. The build was the setup for a [[Dr. Wagner Jr.]]/[[Atlantis]] mask match, the culmination of a long rivalry.

Unexpectedly to the promotion, once the fans realized the long teased mask match would actually happen, they turned on Atlantis and threw their support vocally behind Dr. Wagner Jr. Wagner had turned tecnico in 2004 when the crowds adopted him as a new hero following the death of his [[Dr. Wagner|father]]. The Doc was riding the wave of new tecnico support at the time, while Atlantis was the same unchanged man he'd been for years and had slowed down as a worker.

Some of the anti-Atlantis anger has also been attribuited to [[Arean Mexico]] fans becoming more rebellious and more pro-rudo. The rudo [[Perros del Mal]] faction became popular at the same time by pushing those buttons, and Atlantis was the polar opposite.

While Atlantis was booed, Dr. Wagner grew stronger as a tecnico and a ticket seller. Even more than the fan reaction, the increased value of Dr. Wagner Jr. (and his mask) caused the planned mask match not to happen. Wagner may have agreed to drop his mask to Atlantis at a certain price, but by the time it came to sign the contracts, the price Wagner now wanted to lose his mask was more than CMLL was willing to pay (so much that CMLL couldn't pay him and hope to make a profit on the show in an arena the size of [[Arena Mexico]].) The mask match, despite having been verbally agreed to by both parties in front of the crowd at the end of an Arena Mexico, was quietly discarded.

This left Atlantis in limbo; he was still being booed, and he was going to get the payoff. With no mask match, Atlantis and CMLL gave into the boos. They acknowledged the boos, and had Atlantis react angrily to them. The anger turned into jealously directed at fellow tecnico [[Mistico]], and Atlantis turned on him. The feud progressed thru the fall of 2005, with [[El Hijo del Santo]] helping out Mistico, and Atlantis allying himself with [[Ultimo Guerrero]]. Atlantis became a full rudo, and a member of Ultimo's [[Guerreros del Infiernio]], renamed [[Guerreros del Atlántida]] in honor of their new member. (His entrance into the group would eventually lead to [[Rey Bucanero]]'s departure.)

The rudo turn, and the sequence of events leading up to it, seemed to reawaken Atlantis. He changed his look, replacing the white with black, and often substituting his trademark tecnico blue for red or other colors. In the ring, and after he went completely rudo, he seemed to relish the opportunity to use every dirty trick that was ever used against him. As a rudo, Atlantis has an over the top, bordering on cartoon-ishly evil personality, like a mix of a crazy old man and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snidely_Whiplash Snidley Whiplash].

Despite being a rudo, he still considers himself the idol of the kids, and he still has many fans among them.

In lead up to the aborted mask match, Atlantis won the [[NWA LH|NWA Light Heavyweight Championship]] from Dr. Wagner, and the title has been as visible as titles get in CMLL (though he doesn't always wear it to the ring.) He's virtual co-leader of GdI and still in a high profile position within the promotion.

== Biography ==


A former cliff-diver and bodybuilder, Lizmark used to attend every Wednesday night Acapulco's Arena Coliseo and decided to get involved in lucha after being encouraged to it by popular EMLL referee Roberto "El Güero" Rangel, who thought that the young guy had good genetics for lucha. An interesting, and little known fact about Lizmark is that he really is from Llano Grande, Oaxaca, but he feels like Acapulco is his hometown because he was raised and lived there until he moved to Mexico City.

Lizmark was a natural athlete all his life. Before becoming a wrestler, he won several swimming championships, was a cliffdiver, competed in boxing, and was a bodybuilder (he was Mr. Acapulco, Mr. Gimnasio and Mr. Guerrero). He had a job as a bartender in an hotel and he was making very good money, but his athletic spirit dictated him to become a luchador.

After doing training with Braulio Mendoza during three years, four hours a day, he started wrestling in Acapulco. In his debut match, he teamed with El Extraño against Ranger and his maestro, Braulio Mendoza.

He has always used the same "war name" - Lizmark, a name he took from the warship Bismark which was once at Acapulco's dock, he just changed the sound of because in case that a wrestler from the Distrito Federal had already chosen the same name, if Lizmark made it to Mexico City, he'd have to use another name because the D.F. wrestler would already have the license for that name.

At the time, Lizmark was one of the leaders of the new generation of revolutionary daredevil high flyers that while still being excellent mat workers, used new futuristic style masks and impressive moves like flying dropkicks. Of course the flying dropkick is a really common lucha move nowadays, but back then it was considered state-of-the-art flying. Lizmark is also credited as being one of the first wrestlers to ever use the powerbomb in Mexico as a finisher.

During his rookie days, he captured his first title when he became the State of Guerrero Tag Team Champion with Bowman after defeating Centauro and Chanoc. They defended them successfully five times but lost them to Chanoc and Gurkan. He also became the Guerrero Middleweight champion after beating Centauro. He defended it 10 times and vacated it because he was leaving the circuit to focus on his Mexico City career.

The promoters from EMLL quickly saw his superstar potential and just three years after his debut he won his first major title - the Mexican National Welterweight title he got the 4/18/79 defeating Americo Rocca in his hometown of Acapulco. It would take almost a year (03/29/80) to Americo to regain back his title, but this time the trade was in Mexico City. Of course, Lizmark then would move on to bigger and better things as three months after his loss he got the NWA version of the welterweight title defeating El Supremo (6/4/80) in Acapluco. He'd lose that title the 10/23/81 against La Fiera, in Mexico City.

He put on some muscle weight and moved up to the Middleweight ranks. Now he had a chance to fight different wrestlers like the one that would eventually become his best opponent ever - Satanico. Lizmark defeated Satanico to get the National Middleweight Title first (2/19/82) and the and the NWA belt of the same weight class later (6/3/83). Before getting the NWA title, Lizmark had already lost the National title against Espectro Jr (3/3/83 in Cuernavaca, Morelos). Six months, on December 2, he lost the NWA title against the former champion, Satanico.

In 1984, Lizmark had a Japanese tour for All Japan Pro Wrestling but unlike some of his Mexican counterparts, he didn't get really over with the fans there. Dave Meltzer states that this was because his matches looked way too coreographed. He wouldn't return to Japan until more than a decade later as he came back as a part of some of the CMLL Japan tours.

Already an stablished star, Lizmark moved up in weight class again and became a light heavyweight - the weight class he'd stay at during the remainder of his career. In March of 1988, Lizmark defeated Cien Caras (who was still masked and was going to move up to the heavyweight division) to get the NWA Light Heavyweight title, thus becoming the second Mexican to ever get three different NWA titles from three different weight divisions as the first one had already been Gory Guerrero.

From 1988 to 1992, Lizmark lost and regained that title several times (Fabuloso Blondy - Lizmark - Satanico - Pirata Morgan - Blondy - Lizmark - Satanico - Lizmark - Satanico) but he kept being one of the most dominant light heavyweights of all Mexico as he also enjoyed his first couple of WWA LH title reigns (first one in 1988 defeating El Cobarde in Tijuana; and the second one defeating Enrique Vera, in 1990).

The 1st of July of 1991, Lizmark's son made his debut as El Hijo De Lizmark. As a good father proud of his son, and as a passionate lover of lucha libre, teaming with his own son was one of the most emotional moments Lizmark has ever had during his career.

Three months after Antonio Peña left EMLL to create AAA, Lizmark left La Empresa just like most of the top EMLL superstars (albeit a few exception like Lizmark's long time ring partner and real life friend, Atlantis) did. Soon after that he got the National Light Heavyweight title defeating Universo 2000 in Acapulco (9/18/92). Getting this title one of the promises Peña made to Lizmark if he signed with his new promotion. As expected, Lizmark's son signed with AAA as well.

And of course, Lizmark carried his WWA title with himself to start a new exciting feud with one of the fastest rising rudos at the time, La Parka. Antonio Peña's way to make superstars out of his new character-like personalities was to have them feud with stablished legends, and it really worked. The Blue Genius lost the WWA title to wrestling's favorite skeleton around October of 1993, regained it, and lost it again almost a year later (6/20/94). Lizmark would later lose the National LH title to the same Parka the 9/9/94 in Rio Bravo. Around that time h had some very good sigles matches not only against Parka, but also against "El Puma" Jerry Estrada.

Lizmark did not really like the approach AAA was taking so around mid-to-late 1995 he returned back to EMLL to successfully reform his team with his old partner Atlantis as he enjoyed CMLL tag team and CMLL Trios (having Mr Niebla as their third man) title reigns. He also had a short stay in Promo Azteca, but he didn't like the atmosphere and returned to EMLL again.

In January of 1999 he had chest pains that lead to heart problems (he eventually denied the heart attack rumors) that kept him out during a long time, and he was even told that he'd never wrestle again, but he returned in six months, and though he's not as good as he used to be, he's still a quality graceful luchador.

Even though he has been around for a long time and he has been a high flyer all of his career, he still keeps in very good shape and he's still able to use athletic flying moves, which mixed with his great mat skills, still let him have good matches.

Lizmark has got a well-deserved reputation for being an innovator that influenced a lot of today's stars, and he's one of the most respected workers in the locker room not only for his tremendous skill but for his great attitude and his excellent work ethic.
