This is a very good picture of Kenta Kobashi executing a clothesline, not a Lariat. The difference between a clothesline and a lariat: lariat = left arm, clothesline = right. I move that this pic be moved to a page for clothesline.

I disagree. Stan Hansen, the man most famous for his lariat, has used both arms to do the lariat. A clothesline is just the non-cowboy name for the lariat. - Crimson G

== Biography ==

Jose Ángel Vargas was born in the city of Atoyac, Jalisco State on August 2, 1936. His parents were Francisco Vargas and Francisca Sánchez. He grew up as a fan and when he was old enough to train lucha, with it being Jalisco and all, he studied under the tutelage of Diablo Velasco, and Miguel Navarrete as well.

He debuted under the name "Ranchero" Vargas facing Carlos Mayo in Morelia, Michoacán. There is not an exact date for this, but it probably was 1960 or 1961. He soon started competing under the mask of El Gato Negro (Black Cat), sometimes also announced as El Gato Negro Enmascarado, though I guess they never announced him like that after he lost his mask to José Gómez in Iraputo, Guanajuato.

He also wrestled for a bit as one half of the Hermanos Diablo (not to be confused with the Gemelos Diablo) with the other half being none other than Black Gordman, until Torreón promoter Gonzalo Gómez named him El Ángel Blanco and had him debut at the Plaza de Toros de Torreón during 1962, teaming with Goliath to defeat Polo Torres and Joe Marín. One funny thing about this match is that he was replacing the no-showing Dr. Wagner, who would later become his legendary friend and partner. But his first famous tag team, though a short-lived one, was with another white masked man, El Enfermero. This was in 1963, three years after Enfermero's team partner Médico Asesino died.

Later on he'd form the already mentioned tag team with Wagner. Both were excellent singles wrestlers, but they had that awesome chemistry that only a couple dozen of the greatest tag-teams of all time had. By the late 60s, the tag team would become a trio as El Solitario, one of the greatest workers of all time in Mexico, joined them as their regular partner-in-crime. But seeing Solitario's style, charisma and crowd appeal, what was going to happen ended up happening. El Solitario had to be turned tecnico, and what could have been better than having both members of La Ola Blanca (The White Wave) turn on him? This starting feud set business on fire and all three, now on opposing teams, had tons of great matches drawing sellout after sellout in almost every single arena they stepped in.

Parallel to his tag team or trio career, Blanco also was a successful singles wrestler that other than with Solitario, had several high-profile feuds with people such as Ray Mendoza (his most important opponent other than Soli) and Dory Dixon. He also captured some singles titles during his career, the most important one being the NWA World Light Heavyweight Title he traded with Ray Mendoza (winning it on May 9, 1968 in Torreón and losing it the Christmas of 1968 at Arena Mexico in the semi main event of a sellout card headlined by Solitario vs. René Guajardo mask vs. hair). He also was a National Heavyweight champion (winning it in 1969 from Raúl Reyes and in a true upset losing it to a very young Enrique Vera on October 26, 1973 after a long reign). His other singles title during his career was the National Cruiserweight one, as he became the first champion by winning a tournament, going over El Insólito in the finals at the Palacio de los Deportes on November 13, 1983 and lost it to Adorable Rubí on October 7, 1984.

But going back to his feud with Solitario, they had a mask vs. mask match on December 8, 1972 before an Arena Mexico sellout where Blanco lost his hood. This didn't mean the end of the feud though, as Blanco was one of those guys that didn't need a mask at all. While Dr. Wagner could be said to be more charismatic than Blanco was, the general feeling was that Wagner wouldn't be the same without his mask (and after he lost it, even though he had a great rough rudo look, he wasn't the same), but Blanco kept his popularity intact.

The unmasked Blanco had a great personality and a lot of presence, and even though his wrestling name never changed, the fans and some magazines started referring to him as "El Ranchero" Vargas more often than not, like it was a new wrestler with a new personality instead of the old Ángel Blanco.

Blanco was one of the many guys that left EMLL for the independent UWA in 1975, though he wasn't in the promotion's debut show so perhaps he joined in a second batch shortly after the actual promotion started. He was there, featured in programs against his old-time opponents and of course teaming with Wagner, however his best days were gone. Even though he hadn't been a star for all that long and he was only in his early 40s, by the late 70s he was seen more like a legendary headliner of the past and outside the occasional big match (like him challenging for Tatsumi Fujinami's WWF World Junior Heavyweight Title), he was a true main eventer mostly in the smaller arenas as a newer generation of stars such as Canek, Villano III or Los Misioneros were taking the top slots at El Toreo and the only wrestler from that generation being used constantly as a singles main eventer there was El Solitario, but that was because he still looked as fresh as ever and he was much younger than the others because of his rise to stardom at a very young age.

Not even his short-lived feud with eternal friend Dr. Wagner made him stay on top for too long in the big Mexico State arenas, however he was as big of a star as ever in the Northern circuit, especially Monterrey, a city that was on fire.

Vargas died in a very sad incident on April 26, 1986. He was in a car with fellow wrestlers Dr. Wagner, Jungla Negra, Mano Negra and Solar I, heading back to Monterrey, Nuevo León after working a show in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. The car crashed and Blanco had the worst part as the injuries suffered caused his death, though Wagner's career also came to an end as he was also hurt badly and had to be put in a wheelchair. One weird thing is that their long time ring enemy but great real life friend El Solitario had died just 20 days before, so it's like they had a tragic bond of friendship.

Ever since the 80s there's been many other Ángel Blanco's. The first Junior was Rey Salomón, who was married to one of Vargas' daughters and had the right to use the mask and name until they divorced. He's the one that has had the longest run and probably the best worker. The current one who mostly wrestles in Guadalajara, is a legitimate son of Vargas, and I believe that the Hijos del Ángel Blanco I/II that wrestled at Arena Mexico in the early 90s are legitimate sons as well.

But none of them has truly lived up to the name of the original Ángel Blanco.

== Biography ==

Alejandro Cruz was born in the city of León, Guanajuato. He grew up idolizing the likes of Chino Achiu, Henry Pilusso and Murciélago Velázquez, and while he was a lucha enthusiast, his initial ambitions were to seek a career as a professional musician. He moved to Guadalajara to purse those dreams but he eventually gave up and abandoned them for lucha libre. Before becoming a luchador, he worked as a shoemaker, and he practiced some sports like cliffdiving and football (soccer).

His professional debut was a loss against Rito Romero on June 21, 1942 at the Arena "Canada Dry" in Guadalajara. He used the name "Jungla" Cruz, which he didn't really like, and his first outfit was made out of leather. Jungla Cruz was a popular newspaper comic strip character so the promoter he first wrestled for, an Arab called Elías Simón, gave him that name.

He soon started using his real name instead and moved to Monterrey, where he met Blue Demon, who became his best friend in the business. Demon taught him how to train properly and perfected his Amateur wrestling technique as well.

At first he was your basic lucha libre wrestler. He could go to the mat, he could get rough and he had a few nice holds, but once during a match against Gorilita Flores (the man is said to be the first to use a plancha) he decided to experiment with other flying maneuvers.

When he decided upon a name change he came up with the "Sombra Negra" name, which is the Spanish translation for Black Shadow, however some of his lucha partners agreed that the English translation would have a more effective ring to it. His first match under that name was on May 16, 1957 when he defeated Rolando Vera. I have also heard that he made his debut as Black Shadow against Santo beating him on two straight falls, but I believe that was his Arena Coliseo debut under the name.

Shadow is often credited as the father of the high flying lucha libre and as the creator of the tope (headbutt), as he'd often use an slingshot tope and a flying cross tope, among others, during his matches. In all reality, Leroy McGuirk and Chino Achiu among others were already using that move back in 1933.

He was called "El Hombre de Goma" (The Elastic Man) due to his incredible elasticity. He never trained with weights and focused in aerobics, because he preferred to have speed than strenght.

Due to his Demon connection in 1952 he started wrestling for EMLL's big buildings as a rudo teaming with Blue Demon. They were referred to as "Los Hermanos Shadow" because they once were the last two men in a battle royal and they said that they could not wrestle each other because they were brothers.

As a duo they faced the best Mexico had to offer but they had an especially bitter rivalry with the Atomic Pair of El Santo and Gory Guerrero. Santo and Shadow developed a singles rivalry and Shadow ended up challengeing Santo to a mask vs. mask match.

That mask match, hold on Friday 7th of November, 1952 at La Arena Coliseo, is still considered the most important match in the history of lucha libre in Mexico. The match was such a big deal among the fans and the press, that even though there had been mask vs. mask matches in the past, many agree that this one bout is what skyrocketed the immense popularity of mask vs. mask matches as the biggest thing in lucha libre - a popularity that nowadays is still as high as it was the first day.

This 70 minutes long heated match obviously sold out the building. Shadow lost in the third fall and he was revealed to be Alejandro Cruz Ortíz. A fun fact from that match is that Santo never got for his trophy museum the mask that Shadow was wearing during that match, as Shadow gave Santo (through Demon) a cheaper mask.

Many predicted that Shadow's career was done now that he had lost his mask, but then some stations started to show the luchas on TV, and a new generation of lucha magazines with better photographers was just rising, so the cameras added a new dimension to his flashy flying moves and his career as a main eventer got extended a few more years.

Due to his risky style, Shadow had many injuries so when he was out and wouldn't wrestle, he would work as a shoemaker like he did as a youngster. In 1955 Shadow fell off the third floor of a building to the street, but luckily, nothing happened to him and he just got up a bit hurt from the fall but nothing was broken or seriously hurt.

On October 30, 1958, Black Shadow beat the American wrestler Tony Borne in a hair vs. hair match. This match was a big deal because Borne once unmasked Shadow's "brother" Blue Demon in the middle of a match so he'd always get monster heel heat in any arena he showed up.

Shadow's career went down from there and even though he still had big profile feuds and matches (for instance his rivalry with Dory Dixon that ended in a series of a hair vs. hair matches), it was not like in the old times.

In 1970, Shadow appeared at the Los Campeones Justicieros (Champions of Justice) movie with Blue Demon, Mil Máscaras, Tinieblas and others.

He was out during a lot of time in the 70s due to injuries (he had surgery twice in one of his knees), but he saved up a lot of the money he earned as a luchador and opened his own hotel near the dock of Acapulco, where a lot of his old wrestling partners would sleep when they had to wrestle there. He also worked as the treasurer of the Mexico D.F. wrestling commission during some time.

In 1976 he returned to lucha libre but he was too old and injured to do anything in the ring. He kept wrestling until July of 1981, when the Mexico DF Commission of Box and Lucha didn't let him renew his license due to his poor state of health. He then wrestled something in Los Angeles, but left the business forever before the year had finished.

Shadow never gave a lot of interviews after his retirement and he has always refused to appear in any lucha cards as a guest legend. During the late 80s, a young wrestled that used to be called Pequeño Solín asked him the right to wrestle as Black Shadow Junior. Shadow agreed, because his sons never wanted to wrestle. However there has been many other copies called "Black Shadow Junior" and "Hijo del Black Shadow" that never asked permission to the original one.

Nowadays Shadow is still alive and he sells bags in the Hidalgo Market, at the Colonia Obrera in Mexico City. He has trouble to walk and can only do so aided by a walking stick.

== Biography ==

Member of a respected lucha family. His uncle Sugi Sito is a legend, and his father is a reconigzable wrestler from the golden years of lucha libre.

Made his debut on April 21, 1977, as Kuroneko, facing a wrestler called Mr. Bronce. He wrestled for UWA and he mostly as a midcarder at the promotion's small buildings like Arena Naucalpan and Arena Neza.

In 1979 he held the Arena Naucalpan Tag Team Titles with Rokambole (Villano IV)

He made his first trip to Japan on April of 1981 as a lucha opponent for Tiger Mask (Satoru Sayama). It was then when he changed his name to Black Cat. Well, in reality he had always been using that name, only in Japanese (Kuro = Black, Neko = Cat).

Returned to Mexico in late 1982, but he eventually came back to New Japan. He wrestled there during many years as an undercarder and he can often be spotted at ringside during the promotion's cards.

Joined AAA in February of 1994 as the masked Black Cat and became a founder member of the Los Gringos Locos stable with Love Machine and Eddy Guerrero (later Konnan and others would join them), basically as a replacement for Eddy Guerrero, who used to wrestle a lot of tours for New Japan as Black Tiger.

Had a heated feud with Máscara Sagrada (original) and they had an awesome mask vs. mask match that surprised many, as nobody expected it to be THAT good. This was the semi-main event of the May 15, 1995 "Triplemania II-B" in Zapopan, Jalisco, and many experts and sheet writers rating it from the ****1/4 to ****3/4 range. Finish was classic, as Sagrada tombstoned Black Cat to lose the 2nd fall (Cat won the first one) but then Cat lost the 3rd fall as he was being stretchered out after the deadly martinete. Heat for this match was incredible.

Cat returned to NJPW in September of 1994, wearing a mask, often teaming with Love Machine (also wearing a mask) and Black Tiger (Eddy Guerrero). He stayed there and kept wrestling as an undercarder, but he never returned to AAA. In June of 1996, a masked Black Cat II appeared in AAA but he was not the same wrestler.

He had a few appearances for WCW in January of 1999 as a part of the NJPW/WCW talent exchange, but he had a knee ligament injury that kept him out for some months, and when he came back it was for NJPW. He had another injury on June 2000, but he made his return in early year 2001 and he is still an active wrestler that also helps with the training of the promotion's young prospects.
