EMLL vacated the NWA World Light Heavyweight Championship held by Ray Mendoza due to injury. The injury would keep Mendoza out from December. Mendoza decided to leave EMLL during that break, though it's unclear when he made that decision and if the title situation was related.
EMLL held a standard eight-man tournament to decide a new champion. The first round was held in Arena Coliseo, the final in Arena Mexico, and all matches were held on Sundays.
