Lizmark gave up the Mexican National Middleweight Championship after winning the NWA World Middleweight Championship on June 3, 1983. EMLL held a tournament to decide the new champion.

The tournament was held as a tag team tournament, where the winning team would face off in the final for the vacant title. Wrestlers from EMLL and Promociones Mora were included, though all matches appear to have been held on Friday night EMLL shows. The venue switched between Arena Mexico and Arena Coliseo through the tournament.

Teams appear to be seeded, but it's unclear by what mechanism (and it's possible we're still missing matches.)
