There were two tournaments for CMLL World Tag Team Championship in 1994. Blame Canek.
During the summer of 1994, Canek & Dr. Wagner Jr. were tag team champions, but CMLL was under the impression Canek would soon be leaving the company. To prepare for this, they started a tournament for new champions even before Canek even left. As it turned out, Canek had not left by the time the tournament took place, so the tournament was repositioned as a number one contenders tournament.
The tournament was a sixteen team tournament. All first round matches except Black Magic/Mano Negra vs Los Head Hunters took place on July 22 @ Arena Mexico. That match along with the quarter-finals took place on July 29 @ Arena Mexico. The semi-finals & finals took place on August 5 @ Arena Mexico.
